The Sanjiao (Triple Burner) encompasses the Zang-Fu organs. It governs Qi and thereby also governs Water. (Since water movement depends on Qi transformation.) Therefore, it is called the "Official of Ditches," through which the water passages emerge. The Upper Jiao is like mist; (indicating that) there is water within Qi. The Lower Jiao is like a ditch; (indicating that) there is Qi within Water. The Middle Jiao is like fermentation; (indicating that) Qi and Water envelop each other within it. Whenever the water passages are obstructed, overflowing outward leads to edema, accumulating inward leads to distension, surging upward to oppress the Lung leads to cough and vomiting, and flowing into the Intestines leads to diarrhea. Treatment should focus exclusively on the Sanjiao, having no involvement with other Zang-Fu organs. When contemporary physicians treat other Zang-Fu organs and happen to achieve success, this cannot be cited as an example.
Nocturnal emission accompanied by dreams indicates blazing of Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo). Fengsui Dan (Seal the Marrow Pill) is appropriate. Nocturnal emission without dreams indicates deficiency of the Heart and Kidney. Jin suo Gu Jing Wan (Golden Lock Essence-Securing Pill) is appropriate. However, the Liver governs free flow and drainage. If Liver Fire is excessively abundant, Longdan Xiegan Tang (Gentian Decoction to Drain the Liver) should be used temporarily. If the Liver Soul (Hun) fails to remain in residence, Erjia Longgu Tang (Double-Added Dragon Bone Decoction) should be taken frequently. If there is Liver Heat and Gallbladder Cold, Wendan Tang (Warm the Gallbladder Decoction) is appropriate, added with Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Zaoren (Ziziphus Seed), and Lianrou (Lotus Seed Flesh). The storage and discharge of essence are entirely subject to the command of the Heart. Weixi Wan (Weiyi Pill) is mild yet miraculous. Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Yuanzhi (Polygala Root) is also a methodical nourishing approach. Merely using Kidney-tonifying and astringent drugs is of no benefit. However, for this condition, one must clear the mind and reduce desires, resting quietly for over a year before efficacy appears. Medicinal herbs are originally not something to rely upon heavily.
Contemporary scholar Shen Lukian stated: The Heart stores the Spirit (Shen), the Liver stores the Soul (Hun), and the Kidney stores Essence (Jing). The Heart governing the dream is the Spirit of the Heart; the form seen in the dream is the Soul of the Liver; the essence discharged in the dream is the Essence of the Kidney. Fundamentally, the Heart is the Sovereign, and the Liver and Kidney are the Ministers. There is no case where the Sovereign Fire moves without the Ministerial Fire following. One should first treat the Heart, and then attend to the rest. Huanglian Qingxin Yin (Coptis Decoction to Clear the Heart) is appropriate, composed of Wanyong Huanglian (Coptis Rhizoma), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Gancao (Licorice Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Zaoren (Ziziphus Seed), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root), and Lianzi (Nelumbinis Semen). According to records, Shen Lukian authored *Shen Shi Zunsheng* (*Shen's Reverence for Life*). Generally, his works involve treating diseases as they appear, not escaping the local customs of Jiangsu. This particular section, while the medication is mediocre, has a remarkably superior theoretical stance, so it is excerpted here.
The rhyme states: For nocturnal emission and white turbidity, verification should be sought at the Chi pulse position. The appearance of Kou (Floating and Hollow), Dong (Pulsating), or Jin (Tight) pulses are definitive indicators of these two conditions.
*Zhengzhuan* states: If both Chi pulses are洪数 (Surging and Rapid), it inevitably leads to turbid urination and nocturnal emission.
