The ingredients of Qiongyu Gao (Jade Dew Paste) include Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix). It is prepared by refining Ginseng, Poria, and White Honey into a paste for consumption. For conditions of Lung Yin exhaustion manifesting as dry cough and consumptive disease, this formula yields double the efficacy through the mutual nourishment of Metal (Lung) and Water (Kidney). (Take four jin of fresh Shengdihuang [Rehmanniae Radix], extract one jin of juice. Boil with two jin of White Honey, filter through silk cloth. Grind twelve liang of Fuling [Poria] and three liang of Renshen [Ginseng] into powder. Mix evenly with the aforementioned juice. Place in a porcelain jar, cover the mouth with more than ten layers of paper, seal with bamboo leaves. Put in a clay pot, submerge the neck in running water, and boil over mulberry wood fire for three days and nights. Remove, tie the mouth with silk paper, seal with wax, and suspend in a well for one day. Take out and boil again for half a day. Administer mixed with decoction.)
Chen Xiuyuan stated: Renshen [Ginseng] is sweet and cold in nature, soft and moist, and supplements Lung Qi. However, the Lung dislikes cold; most coughs are caused by external cold or drinking cold fluids. Using such cold, moist, and tonifying medicines will inevitably increase coughing. Past physicians mistakenly believed Renshen had warming properties to dispel cold, hence the saying "Lung heat further injures the Lung." They did not realize that the Lung governs the skin and hair; coughs arising from external Wind-Cold should be treated with modifications of Ganjiang [Dried Ginger], Wuweizi [Schisandrae Fructus], and Xixin [Asari Radix], avoiding the cold nature of Renshen. Nevertheless, the Lung is the canopy of the viscera. If the Fire of the viscera is not controlled by Water, it scorches Lung Metal, causing Lung dryness and dry cough with sound but no phlegm, which differs from cough due to cold-fluid retention. In such cases, it is precisely appropriate to use the moistening property of Renshen to nourish dryness and its cold nature to restrain heat. This is why Qiongyu Gao is extraordinarily effective. Past physicians always included Renshen in formulas for clearing dryness, indicating its strength in nourishing body fluids.
(Treats Heat damaging Yuan Qi, resulting in shortness of breath, fatigue, dry mouth, and sweating.)
Shengmai San (Pulse-Generating Powder) consists of Maidong [Ophiopogonis Radix], Wuweizi [Schisandrae Fructus], and Renshen [Ginseng]. Summer-Heat scorching Lung Metal causes the pulse to become weak and unsupported. If one mistakes this pulse deficiency for a general indication and universally applies this formula, who bears the blame for this surgical error? (Renshen [Ginseng] 5 fen, Maidong [Ophiopogonis Radix] 8 fen, Wuweizi [Schisandrae Fructus] 9 fen, decocted in water and taken orally.)
Chen Xiuyuan stated: The pulse originates in the Kidney, is generated by the Stomach, and converges in the Lung. Zhang Zhongjing, in cases of cold extremities and a faint pulse nearly imperceptible, selected Tongmai Sini Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Prepared Aconite Decoction to Restore the Pulse) to support the True Yang of Shaoyin. In cases of palpitations and intermittent pulse, he selected Fumai Tang (Restore the Pulse Decoction) to nourish the body fluids of Yangming. Both are critical rescue formulas. Sun Simiao formulated Shengmai San (Pulse-Generating Powder) for Summer-Heat injuring the Lung; when the Lung is injured, the pulse gradually becomes weak and scattered, which is worrying. One should take the sweet and moist properties of Renshen [Ginseng] and Maidong [Ophiopogonis Radix], along with the sour and astringent properties of Wuweizi [Schisandrae Fructus], prior to injury, taking them preventively when healthy. Except during the summer months, this should not be used as a routine example. Today, people are confused by the name "Shengmai" (Generate Pulse); whenever they encounter a condition of pulse cessation, they administer this formula, leading to immediate death. This is the disaster caused by Sun Simiao's improper naming. Another version calls it Shenmai San (Ginseng and Ophiopogon Powder), which is more appropriate.
