Treats conditions of Liver Blood deficiency with hyperactive Fire. Symptoms include headache, dizziness and blurred vision, flushed cheeks, bitter taste in the mouth, fatigue, irritability, thirst, depression and unhappiness, pain in the hypochondrium, alternating chills and fever, a heavy and bearing-down sensation in the lower abdomen, and irregular menstruation in women. The pulse is wiry, large, and deficient.
Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) utilizes Shaoyao (White Peony Root) and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis). Zhuru (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Cao (Licorice Root), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), and Ling (Poria) must not be neglected. (Dosage: Chaihu, Danggui, Baishao, Baizhu, Fuling each 1 qian; Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) 0.5 qian; add Wei Jiang (Ginger baked in bran) and Bohe (Mint) for decoction.) It has the most rapid effect in dissipating stagnation and eliminating steaming bone disorder. (The *Yi Guan* states that Chaihu and Bohe in this formula are the most exquisite ingredients. Wood delights in wind shaking; cold causes withering, while warmth promotes growth. When Liver Wood is stagnant, Heart Fire becomes stagnant; when Heart Fire is stagnant, Spleen Earth becomes stagnant; when Spleen Earth is stagnant, Lung Metal becomes stagnant; when Lung Metal is stagnant, Kidney Water becomes stagnant. The Five Elements are interrelated, which is the natural principle. I use one formula to treat Liver Wood stagnation, thereby resolving all types of stagnation; Xiaoyao San is such a formula.) Adding Danpi (Moutan Cortex) and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) contains profound mechanisms. (For instance, adding Moutan Cortex and Gardeniae Fructus creates Bawei Xiaoyao San (Eight-Ingredient Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), used to treat amenorrhea due to Liver injury and Blood deficiency.) Zhao Yuhuang stated: This treats diseases of Liver Qi stagnation. The reasons for Liver stagnation are explained in two ways: first, Spleen Earth deficiency fails to ascend Liver Wood; second, Blood deficiency fails to nourish the Liver. The Liver belongs to Wood Qi and relies entirely on Spleen Earth for nourishment and Kidney Water for irrigation. If Middle Jiao Earth is deficient, Wood cannot ascend and becomes stagnant; if Yin Blood is insufficient, the Liver loses nourishment and becomes withered. The formula uses Baizhu and Fuling to assist Earth virtue to ascend Wood; Danggui and Baishao to enrich Ying Blood to nourish the Liver. Bohe resolves heat, and Gancao harmonizes. Uniquely, Chaihu serves as the messenger herb for the Jueyin Liver channel and also ascends and develops Yang Qi. The Classics state: "When Wood is stagnant, vent it," following its nature of bending and straightening. Hence it is named Xiaoyao (Free and Easy Wanderer).
○ Tong (Unblocking) method can be used to move stagnation. (When Fire Qi is stagnant, it should be unblocked via urination. Tong is mild; Xie (Draining) is severe.)
Treats Heart Heat causing oral ulcers and tongue sores, yellow and red urine, burning pain and urgency in the urethra with difficulty in urination.
Daochi San (Guide Out Redness Powder) originally utilizes Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Caoshao (Licorice Root tip), and Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf) to attack the pathogen. For oral ulcers, penile pain, and dribbling, the fire-draining merit returns to "nourishing water" (tonifying Yin to subdue Fire). (Equal parts decocted. Shengdi cools Heart Blood; Zhuye clears Heart Qi; Mutong drains Heart Fire and enters the Small Intestine; Caoshao reaches the Kidney and penis to relieve pain.)
Ji Chuchong said: Xiexin Tang (Drain the Heart Decoction) uses Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to treat Excess pathogens. Excess pathogens are attributed to the surplus of Wood (Liver); draining the "child" (Heart/Fire) clears the "mother" (Liver/Wood). Daochi San uses Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) to treat Deficiency pathogens. Deficiency pathogens are attributed to the insufficiency of Water (Kidney); strengthening Water controls Fire.
