Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Treats the initial stage of Wind-Warmth disease, with floating and full pulses in all six positions, exterior excess with high fever, and scanty sweating. Use this formula first to release the exterior.
[Ingredients]: Yu Zhu (Polygonatum Odoratum Rhizome), Bai Wei (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Ten ingredients in total, decocted in water, taken three times daily.
Lei Feng's Note: Wind-Warmth disease is triggered by wind; it presents with fever and sweating, so diaphoresis (inducing sweating) should not be used. The current description mentions "scanty sweating," indicating that wind must be combined with cold; therefore, Qiang Huo, Ge Gen, and Ma Huang are added. If sweating is profuse, they should not be used indiscriminately. For Spring-Warmth disease, triggered by cold, with severe heat and no sweating, in patients with strong constitutions, this formula may be used tentatively, but for weak patients, it is still too potent.
Yinqiao San (Honeysuckle and Forsythia Powder): Treats Wind-Warmth, Warm Disease, and Winter-Warmth syndromes.
[Ingredients]: Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructum), Ku Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Dan Dou Chi (Sojae Preparata Semen), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus), Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium), Sheng Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Decoct with fresh Lu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma) soup for administration.
Xiao Ding Feng Zhu Formula (Small Calming Wind Pearl Formula): Treats Warm Disease presenting with cold limbs (Jue) and hiccups, with a fine and taut pulse.
[Ingredients]: Sheng Gui Ban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Zhen E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini), Dan Cai (Mytili Edulis Concha), Ji Zi Huang (Ovi Galli Vitellus).
Add one cup of Tong Bian (Child's Urine) to dissolve and take.
Da Ding Feng Zhu Formula (Great Calming Wind Pearl Formula): Treats Warm-Heat pathogen scorching Yin fluids, or due to mistaken exterior-releasing or reckless purging, presenting with mental fatigue, convulsions (Rong Ru), weak pulse, crimson tongue with little coating, and frequent signs of collapse.
[Ingredients]: Da Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Sheng Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Zhen E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Sheng Gui Ban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Sheng Bie Jia (Trionycis Carapax), Sheng Mu Li (Ostreae Concha), Ji Zi Huang (Ovi Galli Vitellus), Huo Ma Ren (Cannabis Fructus), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Decoct in water and take.
Lei Feng's Note: The above three formulas were all created by Mr. Wu Jutong. Yinqiao San is extremely light and delicate; for the initial stages of Wind-Warmth and Winter-Warmth, it often yields immediate results. However, Da and Xiao Ding Feng Zhu seem cloying and stagnating; they should not be used lightly unless the pulse and symptoms are accurately diagnosed.
Xiaodu Xijiao Yin (Detoxifying Rhinoceros Horn Drink): Treats Wind-Heat toxin causing throat swelling and pain, macules, and rashes.
[Ingredients]: Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu).
Decoct in water and take. If heat is excessive, add Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructum), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), and Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma).
Lianqiao Baidu San (Honeysuckle Detoxification Powder): Treats seasonal toxins causing Parotitis (Fa Yi).
[Ingredients]: Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructum), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructum), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Hong Hua (Carthami Flos), Su Mu (Sappan Lignum), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Gui Wei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fen Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Decoct in water and take. If both parotids and the face are swollen, add Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) and Lou Lu (Lehmannia Scabra Radix); if the swelling is hard and does not subside, add Zao Ci (Gleditsiae Spina) and Chuan Shan Jia (Manis Squama); if stool is dry and constipated, add Jiu Chao Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma stir-fried with wine).
Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction): Treats excessive stomach fire and heat, Yang-Toxin macules, hematemesis, and epistaxis.
[Ingredients]: Da Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Sheng Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu).
Decoct in water and take. If heat is severe with delirium like madness, add Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix).
Sanhuang Shigao Tang (Three Yellows and Gypsum Decoction): Treats Cold Damage Warm-Toxin with simultaneous exterior and interior excess, or after already having been sweated or purged, or when the pathogen has passed through meridians without resolving, presenting with great heat in the Triple Burner, surging pulses in all six positions, and Yang-Toxin macules.
[Ingredients]: Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Dan Dou Chi (Sojae Preparata Semen).
Add Ginger, Jujube, and Fine Tea to decoct, take hot.
Liangge San (Cool the Diaphragm Powder): Treats Warm-Heat epidemic diseases with interior and exterior excess heat, as well as hyperactive Heart Fire, red eyes, constipation, and stomach heat causing macules.
[Ingredients]: Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructum), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructum), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Add Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium), decoct and take. One variation adds one spoonful of Bai Mi (Apis Mellifica).
Lei Feng's Note: The above five formulas all treat seasonal Wind-Warmth Heat toxins resulting in macules, rashes, Parotitis, and throat swelling. They can be applied to patients with strong constitutions, while those with deficiency should use them with discretion.
Jiuwei Qianghuo Tang (Nine-Ingredient Notopterygium Decoction): Treats contraction of irregular Qi of the four seasons, Cold Damage, Wind Strike, Warm Disease, and Heat Disease.
[Ingredients]: Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Add Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) to decoct.
Lei Feng's Note: Zhang Yuansu created this formula, intending for people to modify it. In the initial stage of Cold Damage or Wind Strike, Huang Qin and Sheng Di should definitely not be used. In the initial stage of Warm Disease or Heat Disease, Qiang Huo, Xi Xin, Cang Zhu, and Fang Feng are difficult to use indiscriminately. This shows that medical formulas cannot be rigidly adhered to; this is what is meant by "enabling one to understand the rules, but not enabling one to become skillful."
