Zhang Deming's biography records that a servant in his pavilion suffered from "Shixin" (Heart-Loss, a condition characterized by mental confusion or loss of heart-mind) for several years and was cured after taking this medicine. When the condition recurred later, he took the second prescription and became stable.
First Prescription:
Mercurius (Ban Liang / Half tael) Sheng Bohe (Raw Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, one large handful, mixed with Mercurius and ground into mud, finely ground) She Xiang (Moschus, one Qian) Jian Cha (Jian Tea, high quality, ground, one Fen)
[Note: The original text has an omission here; context implies mixing ingredients.]
Put all the above medicines into the Menthae mud, grind them thousands of times, form pills as large as mustard seeds, take fifteen pills with Yinjin Tang (Decoction of Gold and Silver), taken before going to bed, and take another dose three days later.
Second Prescription:
Cinnabaris (Vermilion) Xurong (Olibanum, each one Fen, separately ground fine) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Baifuling (Poria Cocos with Hostwood) Fushen (Poria Cocos with Pine Root) Hupo (Amber) (each half Liang) Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizome, half Liang, select small ones with many nodes, use only one Fen)
Grind the above medicines into fine powder, make pills with refined honey as large as paulownia seeds, take twenty pills each time. Take after meals with wine, twice a day. If unable to drink alcohol, take with Jujube Decoction; this medicine can be taken regularly!
The emetic medicine Gudi San (Melon Seed Powder) for treating Xin Feng (Wind affecting the Heart/Mind) is from *Quansheng Zhimi Fang*. The servant in Zhang Deming's pavilion vomited a large amount of saliva after taking it, and thus became stable. Doctor Chen Wugong also found it effective.
Gudi Mo (Ground Melonis Fructus) Chixiaodou Mo (Ground Phaseoli Semen Rubrum) (equal parts)
Grind these two ingredients evenly, mix with hot Rice Drink (Mi Yin), take one Qian, or half a Qian for frail persons. Stop once vomiting occurs. The servant in Zhang Deming's pavilion took three Qian before vomiting, and took it again a few days later, and then [was cured/stabilized].
Zhang Deming's biography also records that Grand Preceptor Qin used this method to treat Xu Lv's illness.
Hongdan (Lead Monoxide) Xiaoshi (Natrii Sulfas) (each two Liang)
Melt Xiaoshi into liquid, throw in small pieces of Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Spina), until there is no fire left, remove Zaojiao, take one Yellow Dog Liver, slice it with a bamboo knife, sprinkle several Qian of the medicine powder on it, cook together and eat.
Another Prescription:
Shehanshi (Ophicalcite) Daizheshi (Haematitum) (each four Liang, calcine until red-hot, quench in Vinegar) Tiefen (Ferrum Pulveratum) She Xiang (Moschus, two Qian weight) Zhusha (Cinnabaris, five Qian, [text omitted])
Grind the above medicines into fine powder, use two Liang of Glutinous Rice Flour made into paste as a binder to form pills, divide into two hundred and sixty pills, take one or two pills each time, swallow with Jujube Decoction.
