The *Wei Shi Fang* (Formulas of Master Wei) records: Take one liang of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Chuanwu, 川乌), remove the tip; one liang of Crotonis Fructus (Baddou, 巴豆); half a liang each of Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) and Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄); ten seeds of Momordicae Semen (Miezi, 木鳖子). Place them together into a porcelain or stoneware vessel.
Boil in water for one day. Remove and wash away impurities. Then add half a liang each of Myrrha (Moyao, 没药), Boswelliae Carterii Resina (Ruxiang, 乳香), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), and Poria Cocos (Huashirui, 花蕊石) [Note: Huashirui is typically Pseudoginseng Flower Bud or similar mineral/herb mix in this context, often translated as Rhizoma Polygonati or specific stone herb, here kept as generic flower/stone herb based on text 'Hua Rui Shi']. Boil in water for one day again as before. Remove and wash with Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zaocao, 皂角) water. Then boil in dog meat for one day. Still polish clean with tile fragments until straight and neat. Coat with Pinus Massoniana Seed Oil (Songzi You, 松子油). It is best to keep it close to human body heat/qi frequently.
Whenever measuring the distance and cun (units) between acupoints on the whole body, use the second phalanx of the middle finger of the patient's left hand if male, or right hand if female. Measure internally the distance between the two transverse creases within this segment; this distance constitutes one cun. Use a thin bamboo strip to mark and measure these cun for application. Or, if someone has long hands but a short body, or a long body but short hands, or a tall person with a short chest and abdomen, or a short person with a long chest and abdomen, special attention must be paid when palpating for acupoints. All acupoints are located between the muscles, within the arteries, which are the convergence points of the xi-gu (valleys), serving to circulate Ying-Wei (Nutritive and Defensive) Qi and gather the Great Qi. The meridians are as fine as threads; simply insert the needle directly into the meridian, applying tonification or sedation according to the method, and the disease can be cured. The *Mingtang Ding Chicun Fa* (Method for Determining Cun in Mingtang) states: Eight cun make one chi; eight fen make one cun. Because people vary in height and weight, inaccurate point location may occur. Bian Que’s *Mingtang Jing* from the Qin Dynasty stated: Take the first phalanx of the middle finger of the male left hand or female right hand as one cun. However, because some have long bodies and short hands, or short bodies and long hands, point location may be inaccurate. Sun Simiao’s *Mingtang Jing* from the Tang Dynasty stated: Take the transverse crease of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the thumb of the male left hand or female right hand of the patient as one cun. This requires careful deliberation; skill or clumsiness depends on the practitioner. There is also another method: take the distance between the two transverse creases within the second phalanx of the middle finger of the male left hand or female right hand as one cun. Since using this cun method for acupuncture and moxibustion treatment, most illnesses have been successfully cured. This method is accurate and is now established as the standard.
When marking acupoints, the body must be kept straight, and the limbs should not be curled up. When marking while sitting, avoid leaning forward or backward. When marking while standing, avoid tilting to either side. If marking while sitting, perform acupuncture while sitting; if marking while standing, perform acupuncture while standing. Doing otherwise will result in missing the correct acupoint.
It is also said: If the acupoint is incorrect during moxibustion, it is of no benefit, merely burning good flesh and causing the patient unnecessary suffering. If treating an illness, moxa should be applied to the upper part first, then the lower part; applied to fewer points first, then more points. These matters should all be considered carefully.
