Wang Shi said: Someone who previously suffered from leg weakness and emaciation, after moxibustion on Zusanli (ST36) and Jinggu (GB39), regained normal leg strength. This further confirms that the claim in Huang Jun's Acupuncture and Moxibustion Chart regarding Jinggu (GB39) treating foot diseases with miraculous effect is credible. An official colleague suffered from foot swelling and was moxa-ed at Chengshan (BL57); the wound dried up immediately but did not heal for several months afterward, which was inexplicable. Could it also be due to improper care? This remains unknown. The single-prescription rhyme states: For wind-toxin causing leg weakness and bi-pain, use Jianjing (GB21) and Dazhui (GV14), Fengshi (GB31) and Zusanli (ST36); there is no need to doubt its efficacy. Qianjin Fang (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) lists eight acupoints for moxibustion treating leg weakness. If the disease is in one leg, moxa only that leg; if both legs are diseased, moxa both legs. Generally, for all leg weakness conditions, both legs should be moxa-ed. Alternatively, if not all points can be treated, first moxa Fengshi (GB31), Dubi (ST35), Zusanli (ST36), and Jinggu (GB39), which is also effective. If ineffective, proceed according to the aforementioned method (note: Jianjing (GB21) should not be over-moxaed).
Treating waist pain caused by ascending cold qi from labor and exhaustion, cold bi-syndrome, and inability to extend the legs. Moxa Yangqiao (EX-LE5) 100 zhu (moxa cones). Location: Below the ankle joint.
Treating painful swelling caused by evil blood and qi, and foot swelling. Acupoint: Shang Kunlun (BL60).
Treating Hongjiao (Beriberi/Foot Qi) with knee swelling. Acupoint: Chengshan (BL57).
Treating foot swelling, shortness of breath, poor appetite, irritability, heat, and pain. Acupoint: Xiaochangshu (BL28).
Treating dorsum pedis swelling preventing walking on the ground. Acupoint: Ran Gu (KI2).
Wang Shi said: My mother had been ill for a long time when her feet suddenly swelled in summer. Old tradition holds that one should not bury needles or use moxa in summer, so I dared not use mugwort. Instead, I heated a needle in fire and punctured Zusanli (ST36). Slight bleeding occurred, repeated several times, and the swelling vanished instantly. Having long suffered from foot ailments, seeing this miraculous effect, I also used a large needle. The next day, the swelling subsided as well, how rapid! Later, I often moxa-ed this point. Generally, for treating foot swelling, one should first moxa Zusanli (ST36), then proceed to Yangqiao (EX-LE5) and other points. Additionally, I suffered from Hongjiao (Beriberi/Foot Qi) with ulceration between the toes, which healed using tea powder applied topically. Later, it ulcerated and swelled again; tea powder was ineffective. The swelling gradually spread to the dorsum of the foot. I attributed it to Hongjiao (Beriberi/Foot Qi) and worried secretly, needing a cane to walk. A traveling medicine seller saw this and said: Take dust from under the bed mat and apply it. Following his advice, it healed. This item is worthless yet cures a distressing disease; how can it be ignored?
Treating sudden foot swelling, acute enlargement of the calf like inflation, headache, chills and fever, and tendon tension. If not treated promptly, it will not heal until death in old age. Depending on whether the disease is in the left or right foot, moxa three zhu at the white flesh margin directly below the medial malleolus for immediate cure; if not cured, continue moxibustion. This is Yao Shi's prescription. Where red vessels are visible at the lesion site, moxa Jinggu (GB39) for 21 zhu (3 x 7). This prescription is highly effective. Do not mix bean or horsefly ingredients into the herbal powder; use a small amount of mugwort to form moxa cones. Moxa from below up to the ankle area. According to Ge Shi's method, this can be increased to 50 zhu. There are also Dahuang Ointment (Rhubarb Ointment), Baitouweng Wine Prescription (Podophylli Radix Wine), and Massage Treatment Paste, which are also good.
