[Chart for Bingxu Year: The Six Qi Transformations]
Taiyang Cold-Water governs the Heaven (Si Tian), Taiyin Damp-Earth is in the Earth (Zai Quan), and the middle manifestation is Taiyu Water Movement. The year's Water is excessive, and its qi transformation operates ahead of schedule. This excess coincides with the Heavenly Transformation (Tian Fu).
The qi is bright; grains and beans are indicated; in humans, they transform into... Thus, the Earth's qi is tranquil, and its decree is slow. Cold descends upon the Great Void, and at this time, rain reaches its limit. When rain stops and scatters completely, it moves away from Taiyin. Five represents the standard degree of transformation. Scale-covered creatures remain still, while naked creatures thrive above. Thunder moves below, and Water and Earth combine their virtues, corresponding to Chen [Dragon] above... Muscle atrophy, flaccidity and inability to grasp with the feet, damp diarrhea, and blood extravasation occur. Spontaneous recovery depends on not relying on the source of transformation, but rather suppressing the Water movement, supporting... Grains to preserve true essence, avoiding empty pathogenic qi to ensure peace... Sweet and hot substances are suitable for medicine and food.
Before the midpoint of the year, Taiyang governs, possessing both root and branch transformations. When cold and heat are balanced during this period, the harmonious qi of Heaven arrives.
After the midpoint of the year, Taiyin governs, and Taiyin's transformation follows its root. When damp transformation responds during this period, it is the decree of the Earth.
First Qi: From Shen hour on the day of Major Snow in the Yiyou year to Wu hour on the day of Spring Equinox in this year, totaling 60 days and 87.5 ke. The Master Position is Taijiao Wood. Guest Qi... Heat. Intercalary grains should be beans, so Fire does not become a pathogen.
Second Qi: From Wu hour on the day of Spring Equinox to Chen hour on the day of Grain Full, totaling over 60 days. The Master Position is Shaozheng Fire, Guest Qi is Yangming Metal, manifesting Water Movement in the middle. Great coolness returns unexpectedly; people feel distressed, grass encounters cold, and Fire qi is suppressed. People suffer from qi stagnation and abdominal fullness, and cold begins. One should regulate the Guest Qi of Yangming by sourly tonifying, pungently draining, and bitterly dispersing. Annual grains should be black (Xuan), intercalary grains should be yellow millet (Shu), so dryness does not become a pathogen.
Third Qi: From Si hour on the day of Grain Full to Mao hour on the day of Great Heat, totaling over 60 days. The Master Position is Shaozheng Fire, Guest Qi is Taiyang Water, manifesting Water Movement in the middle. The Qi matches the Movement, distributing the Heavenly Decree. Cold qi moves, and rain descends. People suffer from cold, yet experience internal heat, carbuncles, dysentery, heart heat, and confusion. If untreated, death ensues. One should regulate the Guest Qi of Taiyang by bitterly tonifying, saltily draining, bitterly firming, and pungently moistening. Annual grains should be black (Xuan), intercalary grains should be broomcorn millet (Ji), so cold does not become a pathogen. In this Qi, avoid using cold when far from cold, and do not violate the cold of the governing Qi.
Fourth Qi: From Mao hour on the day of Great Heat to Chou hour on the day of Autumn Equinox, totaling over 60 days. The Master Position is Taigong Earth, Guest Qi is Jueyin Wood, manifesting Water Movement in the middle. Water generates Wood; Wind and Damp compete, and Wind transforms into Rain. Growth, transformation, and completion occur. People suffer from great heat, shortness of breath, muscle atrophy, foot flaccidity, and dysentery with red and white discharge. One should regulate the Guest Qi of Jueyin by pungently tonifying, sourly draining, and sweetly relaxing. Annual grains should be [missing], intercalary grains should be rice, so wind does not become a pathogen.
Fifth Qi: From Yin hour on the day of Autumn Equinox to Zi hour on the day of Minor Snow, totaling over 60 days. The Master Position is Shaoshang Metal, Guest Qi is Shaoyin Fire, manifesting Water Movement in the middle. Where the Great Fire resides, Yang recovers and transforms; grass grows, transforms, and completes; people feel comfortable. One should regulate the Guest Qi of Shaoyin by saltily tonifying, sweetly draining, and sourly astringing. Annual grains should be [missing], intercalary grains should be beans, so heat does not become a pathogen.
Final Qi: From Zi hour on the day of Minor Snow to Xu hour on the day of Major Snow, totaling over 60 days. The Master Position is Taiyu Water, Guest Qi is Taiyin Earth, manifesting Water Movement in the middle. The Yearly Movement is in position, and Damp-Earth occupies it. Earth's qi is correct, and Damp's decree acts. Yin condenses in the Great Void, dust obscures the suburbs; people feel bleak, cold wind arrives, and those who rebel conceive death. One should regulate the Guest Qi of Taiyin by sweetly tonifying, bitterly draining, and sweetly relaxing. Annual grains should be [missing], intercalary grains should be hemp, so dampness does not become a pathogen.
These are the transformations of the Six Qi. The year proceeds with the transformation of Balanced Water. Tian Fu (Heavenly Match) acts as the Law Enforcer. If pathogens strike them, people suffer sudden and urgent diseases. The Classics state: "Those struck by the Law Enforcer suffer rapid and critical illness."
