Deputy Commander KT, Official Mu, age 68. In autumn of the Wuwu year, he campaigned in the South. I accompanied him over a thousand li through Yangzhou. In mid-winter, he fell ill with spontaneous diarrhea, undigested food in stool, cold pain in the navel and abdomen, cold feet that felt no pain or itch when touched. Burning stones to warm them did not help. His pulse was deep, fine, and faint. I reasoned that his qi was deficient due to age, he had penetrated deep into enemy territory, military affairs were burdensome, he was exposed to cold morning and night, diet was irregular, he drank milk and cheese, walked in damp lowlands, and yang qi could not secure the exterior. Thus, clear dampness attacked deficiency, so the disease arose from below, causing cold feet and reversal. *Neijing* states: contracting cold leads to illness; mild cases cause cough, severe cases cause diarrhea and pain. This is a disease caused by the combination of cold and dampness. The method should urgently expel cold-dampness and strongly tonify yang. Only moxibustion can cure it. Use large moxa cones to first moxa Qihai (CV6) 100 zhuang to tonify deficiency of lower jiao yang. Then moxa Zusanli (ST36) bilaterally, 37 zhuang each, to treat cold feet and reversal, and guide yang qi downward. Then moxa Sanyinjiao (SP6) bilaterally to dissipate cold-dampness in the feet. The prescription stated: When cold dominates, treat with pungent-hot. When dampness dominates externally, level with bitter-hot. Use bitter to vent. Use Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), greatly pungent and hot, to assist yang, retreat yin, warm meridians, and dispel cold, thus serving as the Sovereign herb. Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secati) and Guanyi (Cortex Cinnamomi) are pungent-sweet and greatly hot, also dispelling cold-dampness. Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) and Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) are bitter-pungent-warm and dry spleen heat, thus serving as Ministers. Caodoukou (Fructus Cardamomi), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), and Renshen (Radix Ginseng) are sweet-pungent-greatly warm, warming the middle and benefiting qi. Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) is pungent-greatly warm, able to disperse clear dampness. Congbai (Bulbus Allii Cepae) is pungent-warm, to unblock upper jiao yang qi, thus serving as Assistants. It is said: Tonifying below and treating below requires urgent preparation; urgency implies strong flavor and potency. Therefore, prepare a large decoction. After a few doses, diarrhea stopped, pain decreased, feet gradually warmed. Regulate diet, recovered after more than ten days. Next year, August, passing Xiangyang, encountering continuous rain for over ten days, previous symptoms recurred. Again moxa Yangfu (GB38) bilaterally, 37 zhuang each, administered previous medicine for a few doses, cured well. From then on, the Deputy Commander valued medical arts highly and treated me with greater intensity.
