Chapter: Treatment of Bitter Heat Caused by Mineral Drugs (With Discussion) / Treatment of Mineral Drug Qi Rushing to Head and Face with High Body Fever (With Discussion)
Category: Formulas
[English Translation]
Regarding the five elemental body types, their natures differ. Those of the Earth type have prominent bones and clear qi; those of the Water type have slender bodies and long-lasting qi; those of the Wood type have coarse tendons and bones.
Ge Gen Tang (Pueraria Decoction): Treats the sinking of mineral drug effects.
Ingredients: Ge Gen (Radix Puerariae), Zi Cao (Radix Arnebiae) (each 8 liang); Xi Jiao Jie (Hornis Rhinocerotis Cutis) (12 liang); Lu Feng Fang (Nidus Vespae) (10 liang, prepared by roasting); Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas); Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) (each 2 liang).
Usage: Cut the herbs, soak in wine overnight. Boil the next morning, take the decoction in divided doses.
Ren Shen Tang (Ginseng Decoction): Treats cases where, although mineral drugs (Ru Shi) have been taken, cold symptoms persist. This occurs because warm-tonifying decoctions were not taken first before ingesting the stones, causing the pathogenic factor and the drug effect to remain in separate locations, leading to mutual obstruction between the Dan Shi (cinnabar/stone) toxicity and Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) qi.
Ingredients: Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Jie Geng (Radix Platycodonis), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (each 2 liang); Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) (4 liang).
Usage: Cut the herbs, boil in 3 sheng of water.
When Ru Shi (mineral drugs) act up, causing heat to rush upward to the head and face, accompanied by high body fever, it is due to excessive indulgence in lifestyle adjustments, resulting in blockage of the Zang-Fu organs and failure of Qi to circulate freely. The nature of Ru Shi can stimulate the floating of Yang Qi.
Ji Cai San (Shepherd's Purse Powder) (from *Sheng Hui Fang*): Treats fever from Ru Shi, heat rushing to the eyes and head, stubborn heat with dizziness and oppression, dry mouth, mental restlessness, difficulty in urination and defecation, and vague spirit.

Usage: Pound and sieve into a coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose, boil in 1 sheng of water until reduced to 6 fen, remove dregs, and take warm at any time.
