Postpartum lochia that flows continuously is generally caused by cold in the zang-fu organs. When the Lung Qi is not harmonious, after childbirth, the lochia descends due to deficiency and cannot be restrained, resulting in continuous dripping. If it persists for a long time without healing, the menstrual blood fails to nourish the body, leading to hard and painful pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, sallow and scorched complexion, and shortness of breath. These are the manifestations of this syndrome. The treatment method should preferably use warming and tonifying formulas.
Whenever one catches wind and seeks coolness during pregnancy, cold enters the Bao Luo (uterine collaterals). By the time of delivery, the blood must be scant. Or if one is exposed to wind and cold immediately after childbirth, all these cause wind-cold to contend with the blood. The blood becomes stagnant and obstructed, unable to circulate freely, accumulating inside. Sometimes this leads to incomplete expulsion of lochia, thus causing abdominal pain.
For women after major childbirth, if there is pain in the abdomen, navel, or lower back, it is caused by failed blood and foul matter. Physicians often mistake this for deficiency-cold and treat it with drying-hot medicines, which has misled many people. The *Nan Jing* states: "All pains belong to excess; excess conditions are often heat." One may use Dao Shui Wan (Water-Guiding Pill) or Yu Gong San (Yu's Powder) to induce bowel movements three to five times. Then, use Yu Zhu San (Jade Candle Powder) combined with herbs that harmonize blood, unblock meridians, descend fire, and benefit water. One must be cautious about immediately taking Hei Shen San (Black Divine Powder) or other drying-hot medicines. It should be treated similarly to miscarriage.

Ze Lan Tang (Euphrasia Decoction) [from *Qian Jin Fang*]: Treats incomplete lochia postpartum, alternating abdominal pain, accompanied by chest fullness and shortness of breath. Question: Why does incomplete lochia cause abdominal pain postpartum? Answer: Although postpartum evil blood usually flows, external contraction of the Five Evils or internal injury from the Seven Emotions can cause it to gradually stop. Residual blood accumulates and stagnates, not flowing freely, leading to incomplete discharge and abdominal pain. This is because seeking coolness in the wind during pregnancy causes cold in the Bao Luo. At delivery, blood is scarce. Exposure to wind/cold postpartum causes wind-cold to contend with blood, leading to stagnation and accumulation. Sometimes lochia is incomplete, causing abdominal pain that radiates to the lower back.
