The above ingredients are ground into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decocted in one zhen of water for a few boils, and take hot. Adding salt is also acceptable. Another record states that a patient with cold damage who sweated suddenly developed fever and spontaneous sweating several days later, with a wiry and rapid pulse and mental restlessness. This is true relapse due to overwork. I diagnosed it as caused by excessive mental exertion; the spirit's residence had not recovered its original state, and the spirit was further injured by overwork, leading to disharmony of Ying and Wei. One should tonify the "Son" organ (Spleen), allowing qi to enter the Spleen and resolve the overwork, hopefully leading to recovery. I prescribed Bupi Tang assisted by Xiaochaihu Tang, which resolved the condition. Someone questioned: The classics say "Deficiency should be tonified by its Mother," why tonify the Son now? I replied: Do you not know the difference between deficiency and overwork? *Nan Jing* says: "Deficiency should be tonified by its Mother, Excess should be drained by its Son." It is common knowledge that deficiency should be tonified by its Mother. However, *Qianjin Fang* says: "For severe Heart overwork, tonify Spleen qi to benefit it. When the Spleen is prosperous, it affects the Heart." For this type of overwork, one should tonify the Son, which is unheard of by people. The Mother generates me; the Son succeeds me and assists me. To treat deficiency, one tonifies what I generate (the Son), which is consistent with the meaning in *Jinnang*: "When the root bone receives qi, the remains receive shade." To treat overwork, one tonifies what assists me (the Son), which is consistent with Xunzi's saying: "There has never been a case where the son is rich and the father is poor." This is why treating deficiency and overwork differs.
