The condition known as "Frightened Fetus in Pregnancy" occurs when the pregnancy is nearing full term and the fetus's spirit and consciousness are already formed. If a fall from a height occurs during the time of impending labor, damaging the uterine vessels (Baoluo), it leads to bleeding and fetal movement. The Qi and Blood then rush upward to the chest and heart, causing Qi obstruction and unconsciousness. In this state, if the mother's face is red and her tongue is cyanotic, with no foam coming from the mouth, it indicates that the fetus is dead but the mother survives. If both the lips and mouth are cyanotic and foam is present, it indicates the death of both mother and fetus. If the face is cyanotic and the tongue is red with foam, it indicates the death of the mother but the survival of the fetus. If bleeding continues without stopping, leading to dryness of the uterus and withering of the fetus, the fetus will die.
Formulas
Sangjisheng San (Mulberry Mistletoe Powder), sourced from *Wei Shi Fang*, treats pregnancy complicated by fright or trauma due to sexual intercourse, excessive physical labor damaging the fetal sac, or ingestion of toxic substances causing uterine deficiency and slipping, resulting in persistent dripping of menstrual blood. If not treated urgently,敗血 (decayed blood) may attack the heart, endangering both mother and fetus, leading to gradual drying of the fetus and imminent danger.
Ingredients: Sangjisheng (Taxilli Herba), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, remove radicle, soak in wine), Chuanxuduan (Radix Dipsaci, soak in wine), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi, remove hairs, stir-fry), Fushen (Poria cum Radix Pini, remove wood core), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, stir-fry with Arseni Trioxidum powder into beads), Baizhu (Radix Atractylodis Macrocephalae) — each 1 liang; Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried) — each 0.5 liang; Chen Aiye (Folium Artemisiae Argyi, aged) 1 liang; Wumei (Fructus Mume, remove pits) 0.5 liang.
Longgu San (Dragon Bone Powder), sourced from *Shenghui Fang*, treats women suffering from continuous bleeding due to traumatic abortion.
Xiezha Tang (Crab Claw Decoction), sourced from *Qianjin Fang*, treats pregnancy complicated by falling and loss of balance, causing fetal movement rushing upward to the chest and heart. In severe cases, blood may be vomited, breathing becomes obstructed and irregular, or there is heavy downward bleeding (one dou five sheng). If the fetus does not deliver and has died, apply cold compresses to the abdomen to simulate labor conditions to expel the dead fetus. If the mother is weak, short of breath, exhausted to the point of death, and suffers from restlessness and tossing, administering this medicine will calm the mother and stop the bleeding. If delivery is due, the fetus will be born immediately. For twin pregnancies where one is dead and one alive, this medicine helps expel the dead fetus while keeping the live one safe.
Ingredients: Xiezha (Claws of Potamocarcinus sinensis) 1 sheng; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae) — each 2 qian; Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini) 2 liang (or use Lujiaojiao/Colla Cornus Cervi).
Preparation: Coarsely crush the herbs. Boil in 1 dou of water flowing from the east until reduced to 3 sheng. Strain the dregs, dissolve the Ejiao completely. It is best to take as a single dose; if not possible, take another dose after a meal interval. If the jaw is stiff and swallowing is difficult, pry open the mouth and pour the medicine in. Once the medicine takes effect, the fetus will be delivered, saving both mother and child. If the fetus is already dead, only the mother survives. If there was no fall but normal pregnancy with bleeding, this decoction will stop the bleeding. Another version excludes Guixin; some claim Cinnamon Twig disturbs the fetus, but this is not necessarily true. When decocting, use an east-facing stove and reed firewood.
Zhuru Jiu (Bamboo Sheath Wine), sourced from *Daquan Liangfang*, treats accidental falls during pregnancy causing bone injury (Zhu) and fetal pain, or fetal restlessness in the eighth or ninth month.
Ingredients: Qingzhuru (Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam) 2 he; Haojiu (Good Rice Wine) 1 sheng.
Preparation: Boil for three to five boils, divide into three doses. This will stabilize the fetus.
To treat women who have repeatedly suffered fetal damage during pregnancy. (Also known as Carp Congee, sourced from *Daquan Liangfang*)
Ingredients: Liyu (Cyprinus carpio) 2 jin; Jingmi (Oryza sativa var. glutinosa) 1 sheng.
Preparation: Cook according to standard congee methods. Use little salt, plenty of Congbai (Scallion bulb) and Chichi (Fermented Soybean Paste), and eat with vinegar for best results. Prepare this three times within a month for efficacy. It ensures safety without taboos. Another version includes Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and excludes vinegar.
Xiong San (Chuanxiong Powder), sourced from *Zhouhou Fang*, treats pregnancy complicated by falling, where the fetus does not move, accompanied by abdominal pain, heavy sensation in the waist, and retention of a dead fetus in the womb. Taking three doses in a short time will cause immediate expulsion.
Usage: Grind Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) into fine powder. Mix with hot wine and take one fangcunbi (approx. 5-10 grams) per dose. Take 3-4 times daily for immediate expulsion. Another version uses hot water for mixing.
To treat pregnancy complicated by unexpected mishaps, causing fetal restlessness and critical exhaustion. *Qianjin Fang* also uses this for Zifan (Fetal Restlessness/Anxiety). (Sourced from *Daquan Liangfang*)
Usage: Drink 1 sheng of Zhuli (Bamboo Sap). Recovery is immediate. (Preparation note: Take fresh bamboo, cut off nodes at both ends, burn the middle section, and collect the juice dripping from both ends.)
To treat pregnancy.
Usage: Mix 1 qian of Zhusha (Cinnabar) powder with the white of 3 raw chicken eggs. Take all at once. If the fetus is dead, it will be expelled; if alive, it will be stabilized.
To treat abdominal pain caused by fetal trauma in pregnancy.
Usage: Take 1 sheng of Dongmazi (Ricini Semen), crush it, add 2 sheng of water, boil to extract the juice. Bring to a boil and divide into 3-4 doses.
To treat fetal damage in pregnant women; also treats Baidan (a skin condition resembling vitiligo or leukoderma).
Usage: Bathe in strong decoction of Zhu Gen (Phyllodisci Radix) 3-4 times daily until healed.
Chanbao Fang Chuanxiong Huangqin Tang (Chuanxiong and Scutellaria Decoction for Obstetric Emergencies), treats traumatic abortion with abdominal pain and discharge of yellow fluid.
Ingredients: Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) in equal parts.
Preparation: Coarsely chop. Take 5 qian per dose, combined with 1 he of stir-fried Shumi (Sorghum vulgare), decoct in water and drink.
Zhengshi Shengjin San (Zheng’s Victory-Gold Powder), sourced from *Yonglei Qianfang*, treats pregnancy complicated by dietary injury to the fetus, with pathogenic factors transmitting to the Spleen and Stomach, causing Qi deficiency and cold oppression, leading to lower abdominal distension and pain, heavy sensation in the waist, and constipation.
Ingredients: Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, soak in wine), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, clean and remove albedo), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, sliced and dried) — each 1.5 qian; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried); Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex)...
