Apoplexy (Zhong Feng) is a condition that arises because all five Zang organs are deficient. If physicians fail to treat the root cause and instead administer wind-dispelling formulas such as Xuming Tang (Cure-Stroke Decoction) or Paifeng San (Wind-Expelling Powder), it is entirely due to improper differentiation of the pulse and treatment. (If one wishes to regulate Qi transformation and resolve phlegm, one should first take Liumei Shunqi San).
Liumei Shunqi San (from *Weisheng Baojian*):
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 5 liang, lightly stir-fried until yellow), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, 3 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 3.5 liang, white pith removed, stir-fried with bran), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 2 liang, white pith removed). Add two slices of fresh ginger. Decoct until three-tenths remain.
Qiang Gui Tang: Treats apoplexy with sweating and all types of wind obstruction. Doubling the amount of Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) yields excellent results.
Chuan Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix [2 or 3 liang], cut into pieces), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 1 liang, cut into pieces), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 5 liang, cut into pieces), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2.5 liang, honey-fried). Process into a coarse powder. Take each dose... wait...
Treats chicken-claw wind in men and women, where hands and feet tremble and cannot grasp objects. Taking two doses ensures complete recovery. (See Chuanxiong San for the formula).
Xijiao Shengma Tang (from *Weisheng Baojian*): Treats apoplexy with numbness and insensitivity, pain between the nose and forehead, pain in the lips, mouth corners, Jiache acupoint, and hairline, inability to open the mouth, and interference with speech and eating. The left forehead and cheek feel pasted; touching causes pain. This is caused by wind-toxin invading the Foot-Yangming Meridian, leading to slight blood stasis and stagnation.
Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 1 liang 2 qian 5 fen), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 7 qian each), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, half liang each)...
Take warm after meals, three times daily. The Foot-Yangming belongs to the Stomach. The classics state that the intestines and stomach are like a market, containing everything. Among the six meridians, blood and Qi are abundant here, responsible for rotting and ripening food; thus, toxins from food accumulate in the intestines and stomach. Therefore, this formula uses Xijiao as the chief herb to resolve dietary toxins. The Yangming meridian encircles the lips, flanks the mouth, originates at the nose crossing the forehead, follows the Jiache, ascends before the ear, passes through the Guest Master acupoint, follows the hairline to the frontal skull. Thus, the illness suffered by Duke Wang involves this meridian. Using Shengma...
Xixian San (from *Jingyan Liangfang*): Treats wind-phlegm failing to descend, with sounds in the throat resembling sawing.
Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 14 large pieces, raw and sliced), Zhuya Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Spina, one piece, roasted). Prepare as one dose. Add two cups of water, decoct to one cup, remove dregs. Add ginger juice...
Duoming Tongguan San (from *Weisheng Baojian*): Treats apoplexy with phlegm rising, loss of consciousness.
Zhizhu Hua (Daphne Genkwa Flower), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Huayin Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma from Huayin), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba). Grind these five equal parts into powder after sun-drying. Use a small amount, blown into the nostrils using a pen tube...

Xiao Xuming Tang (from *Danliao Fang*): The Preface to Materia Medica records: A sixty-year-old man had sores on his legs. Discomfort arose from eating meat. A physician cured him with purgatives. Later, while going out, he suffered apoplexy with sweating, sudden swelling of the head and face turning purple-black, excessive sleepiness, and small swollen sores on the ears oozing yellow fluid. Xiao Xuming Tang was administered with doubled dosage...
Treating apoplexy with rebellious Qi and phlegm-saliva (from *Weisheng Baojian*).
Administer Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill) mixed with ginger juice down the throat. Next, use Shengfeng Xiao Xuming Tang, increasing the amounts of Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Shexiang (Moschus). Often, apoplexy symptoms arise from irregular anger or joy, or...

Fuzi Jiu (from *San Yin Fang*): Treats cold-phlegm, accumulation masses, distension, and various bi syndromes caused by apoplexy.
Da Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, one piece, skin and navel removed, cut into four slices). Soak in one sheng of pure wine: five days in spring, three days in summer, seven days in autumn and winter. Take one ge per dose.
The *Danliao Fang* states that when apoplexy strikes suddenly with multiple symptoms arising simultaneously, the patient becomes critically ill. In emergencies, medicine cannot be swallowed. Famous doctors often use Suhexiang Wan to rub against the teeth to open the jaw, or blow powders of raw Ban Xia and Zaojiao into the nasal cavities, or administer old frost plum juice to collect phlegm, or take true clear oil mixed with Shexiang to unblock Qi. Alternatively, Shexiang is used to decoct Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder) as an essential combined remedy. Otherwise, wind qi may increase daily, preventing recovery.
For apoplexy patients unable to swallow soup or food...

If the patient suddenly worsens, do not worry. This is the attacking power of the medicine. After taking four thousand pills, recovery is certain. Five thousand pills restore robust health. I prepared it according to the method and gave it to Su, exactly as predicted. Zhong Zhen added that this medicine differs from the efficacy described in the Materia Medica. It likely originated in Jiangdong, where locals call pigs ... and stink ... qi. Because this medicine smells like pig ... qi, it is named accordingly. Steaming and drying eliminate the ... odor. After each dose, eat three to five spoons of rice to suppress it. Harvesting on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month is best. Ordered to be recorded in detail by the Imperial Hospital.
