The pulse is divided into deficiency and excess, which I will now explain to you. The floating (Fu), rapid (Shu), deep (Chen), and slow (Chi) pulses correspond to cold and heat conditions. In the anterior position (Cun/Inch) of the Guan (Bar) position, the Yang pulse is floating and strong with a rapid rate; in the posterior position (Chi/Cubit) of the Guan position, the Yin pulse is deep, fine, and slow.
The *Nan Jing* (Classic of Difficult Issues) states: Pulses are categorized as deficiency or excess. The choppy (Se) and soggy (Ru) pulses indicate deficiency, while firm and solid pulses indicate excess. The Qi of the five Zang organs is full but not obstructed by pathogenic factors; what is termed "excess" refers to the presence of pathogens. Therefore, when pathogens are abundant... [Text fragment] ...it is said that a rapid pulse indicates Yang emerging. A wiry and rapid pulse indicates heat combined with wind; a deep and fine pulse indicates attacking cold Qi. A floating Yang pulse indicates exterior pathology, while a sinking Yin pulse indicates interior pathology. One must examine the Cun, Chi, and Guan positions carefully.
Floating, wiry, rapid, and hurried pulses are all Yang pulses. Deep, faint, fine, and slow pulses are all Yin pulses. All Yang pulses relate to heat, and all Yin pulses relate to cold. Heat generates wind, and cold causes Qi movement.
Practitioners must know how to determine the time of death. Among the nine abnormal pulses (Jiu Guai Mai), one can ascertain auspiciousness or ominous signs. The knotted (Jie), intermittent (Cu), firm (Lao), and alternating (Dai) pulses allow for the estimation of life expectancy.
The long, short, deficient, rapid, knotted, alternating, firm, moving, and fine pulses constitute the Nine Dao Pulses. "Dao" implies connectivity. Although distinct from the Seven Superficial and Eight Interior pulses... [Text fragments regarding 'Wu Lou' etc.] ...For example, if there is one pause every forty beats, it indicates one Zang organ lacks Qi, leading to death within four years. If there is one pause every thirty beats, two Zang organs lack Qi, leading to death within three years. If there is one pause every ten beats... [Text fragments regarding 'Dong Zhong Bu Ying Zhi'] ...If there is no Dai pulse (regular pause) after fifty beats, the five Zang organs have received Qi; this describes a person who is peaceful and free of disease. If a Dai pulse appears every forty beats, one Zang organ lacks Qi, leading to death within four years.
With each exhalation, three cun of Yang Qi exits; with each inhalation, Yin Qi enters. The rhythm of respiration ensures balanced pauses, allowing ascent and descent of Qi to continue unceasingly in the center. Respiration is the entry and exit of Qi. Exhalation follows Yang outward; inhalation follows Yin inward. With each exhalation, the pulse travels three cun; with each inhalation, the pulse travels three cun. Through the cycle of respiration, Qi circulates throughout the body.
When Liver Qi fails to reach its destination, Wind Qi arises. When Kidney Water descends, Rain nourishes Dampness. Lung Qi is clear and floats upward, corresponding to Heaven. Earth Qi is turbid and generates Dampness that obstructs the throat. The Spleen governs intake and output, resembling an empty valley.
The *Treatise on Yin-Yang and Corresponding Images* states: Heavenly Qi connects with the Lungs; Earthly Qi connects with the throat; Wind Qi connects with the Liver; Thunder Qi connects with the Heart; Grain Qi connects with the Spleen; Rain Qi... [Text fragments].
Yang is the exterior of form, Blood is the substance of Yin. Essence-Qi is Ying (Nutritive), and Vigor-Qi is Wei (Defensive). Qi belongs to Yang and governs the exterior; Blood belongs to Yin and governs the interior. Blood is Ying, Qi is Wei. Ying and Wei are the refined essences of food and water, harmonizing within the five Zang organs and circulating freely through the six Fu organs.
There are fifteen Luo (Collateral) vessels and twelve Jing (Meridian) channels, corresponding to the degrees of the Zhou Tian (Celestial Sphere) above and the Earth below. Like the hundred marks of a water clock, they flow continuously, serving as the framework corresponding to the Celestial Sphere.
There are twelve Jing meridians and fifteen Luo collaterals, totaling twenty-seven, flowing up and down together. Qi and Blood interpenetrate without rest. Thus, the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang over a year... [Text fragments] ...the twelve pulses correspond to the rivers of the earth, connecting interior and exterior as table and lining. Human Qi and Blood should be abundant; if the six pulses show no pathogen, the body is healthy.
The *Treatise on Separating True from Evil* states: The Sage establishes measurements based on Heaven and Earth. Therefore, Heaven has stellar degrees, Earth has major rivers, and Humans have meridians. [Text fragments regarding 'Jiang Shui', 'Hai Shui'] ...externally corresponds to the Sea, Yangming externally... [Text fragments] ...internally corresponds to the San Jiao (Triple Burner). What sustains human life is Qi and Blood alone. Qi guards the exterior, filling the skin; Blood nourishes the interior, sustaining the meridians. The whole body is united without gap.
[Text fragments regarding 'Ping Zhe Wei'] ...The essence of Fire generates Shen (Spirit); the abundance of Water Qi generates Zhi (Will). The transformation of Essence is called Shen; the retention of Intent is called Zhi. The Heart belongs to Southern Bing-Ding Fire, located in the Li Palace, revered as the ruler of the five Zang organs, from which Shen emerges. The Kidney belongs to... [Text fragments].
The Hong-Gou (Surging-Hook) Summer pulse resides at the Cun position. It is laughable that many ignorant people do not understand. If the pulse is merely surging without the hook quality, and the hook does not appear at the proper time, blood may often escape. The Autumn pulse is slightly feathery (Mao) without being choppy, indicating clear Qi free of pathogens.
Spring is Wiry, Summer is Surging, Autumn is Feathery, Winter is Stone-like. These are the correct seasonal pulses. However, one must also diagnose the presence of Stomach Qi to confirm a person is peaceful and disease-free. But seeing... [Text fragments] ...Spring fears Geng-Xin (Metal days), Autumn fears Bing-Ding (Fire days); slight feathery or surging-rapid pulses indicate invading disease.
The Spring pulse is the Liver pulse. The pulse should be wiry and urgent. If instead it is floating, short, and choppy, it indicates Lung Metal pathogen attacking the Liver, resulting in Liver disease, known as "Thief Pathogen."
The *Yuhan Gejue* (Song Verses of the Jade Box Classic) is extremely profound and subtle. Ordinary eyes find it difficult to explore its mysteries. If one seeks precision within the principles, examining the profound and penetrating, one may approach divine understanding.
The *Yuhan Jing* song verses were composed by Master Guangcheng based on the *Su Wen* and *Nan Jing*. The meaning is extremely obscure and profound; only those who lecture and read the *Nei Jing* can comprehend it. Later learners... [Text ends abruptly].
