Cracking (Chunlie) is caused by deficiency of muscle tissue. When exposed to wind and dew in winter, the skin cracks due to wind-cold invasion. The hands and feet break open, hence it is called Cracking.
Prescriptions
Danfen Gao (Cinnabar Powder Ointment)
Treats unbearable pain when the soles of the feet touch the ground.
Sesame Oil (4 liang), Huang Dan (Lead Monoxide, 2 liang), Bai Jiao Xiang (White Rosin, 0.5 liang), Guang Fen (White Lead Powder, 1 liang), Bai He (Lotus Leaf, 2 qian, powdered), Ru Xiang (Frankincense, 2 qian), Mo Yao (Myrrh, 2 qian). Process into an ointment and apply to remove loose skin.
Huishen Gao (Reviving Spirit Ointment)
Treats cracking of hands and feet, where the skin resembles steamed pears. This condition may persist even in spring and summer.
Ginger Juice, Red Fermented Rice (Hong Zao), Pig Fat, Salt. Grind these ingredients thoroughly and stir-fry until cooked. Apply into the cracks. Although painful initially, the skin will soften and the cracks will heal shortly after.
Jiaoyan Tang (Pepper and Salt Decoction)
Treats pain from cracking of hands and feet.
Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Shu Jiao (Sichuan Pepper, 2 fen), Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Salt (1 liang each). Cut the herbs decoct in 4 sheng of water to obtain a concentrated liquid for topical application. Alternatively, use Pig Fat.
Bai Ai Gao (White Mugwort Ointment)
Treats chronic cracking.
Take a large handful of human hair and one bowl of Tung Oil. Boil in a clay vessel until the oil boils and the hair melts completely. Add Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) and Song Xiang (Pine Rosin) powder. Remove from heat and spread to cool.
Zhushi San (Pig Fruit Powder)
Treats cracked skin.
Zhu Tao Er (Ficus Heterophylla Fruit?), Tu Gua Gen (Thladiantha Dubia Root), Shang Lu (Phytolacca Acinosa Root). Equal parts finely powdered. Take a small amount every morning and apply to the affected area as usual.
Taoren Gao (Peach Kernel Ointment) [From *Yuyao Yuan Fang*]
Treats cracked skin.
Take an appropriate amount of Peach Kernels (Taoren). Soak in hot water, peel, remove pits, and grind into a paste. Mix with a small amount of honey and dilute with warm water. Apply and massage the affected area. Subsequently use Yuxie Gao.
Yuxie Gao (Jade Dust Ointment) [From *Yuyao Yuan Fang*]
Treats roughness and lack of luster on fingers and cheeks.
Qing Fen (Calomel, 3 qian), Ding Fen (White Lead Powder, 3 qian), Mi Tuo Seng (Litharge, 2 qian). Finely powder these ingredients. Extract the white kernel from Soap Pod (Zao Jiao Zi), soak in hot starch water to form a paste, and mix with the powder.
Shaofa San (Burnt Hair Powder) [From *Yong Lei Qian Fang*]
Treats foot cracking, commonly known as "foot chaps."
Process silver into thin sheets or wires, fry in Sesame Oil. Mix with ash from burnt hair. Wash feet with water, then pour the oil into the cracks.
Matì Tang (Horse Hoof Decoction)
Treats chronic cracking.
Ma Ti (Horse Hoof, inferior quality burned to ash), Mao Er Mao (Cat Hair, burned to ash), Nan Zi Tou Gou (Male Scalp Dandruff, burned to ash). Mix evenly, blend with clear oil, apply, and cover with silk gauze to protect. Avoid water contact.

Place fine Alum (Fan) inside silkworm cocoons that have emerged from moths. Burn over charcoal fire until boiling. Cool, grind cocoon and alum finely, and apply mixed with Sesame Oil.
Xian Ji Zhi (Salted Vegetable Juice)
Treats feet that crack frequently regardless of season.
Soak and wash feet in 3 sheng of heated Xian Ji (Salted Pickled Vegetables) juice, 2-3 times daily.
