Method for Cultivating Rehmannia (from Qianjin Fang)
First select good quality Rehmannia; those that are reddish and soft are preferred. Plow the land deeply; reverse plowing frozen soil in the twelfth lunar month is even better. Select thick and large Rehmannia roots, cut them into four or five cun lengths. Harvest on the tenth day of the month. From morning to night, they should turn black. Those not completely black should be selected again the next day for steaming. Previously pounded and juiced parts are decocted in a copper vessel. Master Zhang Guo's Method for Ingesting Apricot Kernels (from Wangshi Boji Fang)
Humans are formed from earth, soul from sun, spirit from moon. After birth, death should not occur; all should achieve longevity. Medicine relies on fence roots... Use money... Just... Ding Lingwei etc., did not leave worldly affairs, kept wives and children, ingested raw Apricot Kernels (Xingren). After long ingestion, immortals came to welcome, riding dragons and cranes to ascend. Only by ingesting Apricot Kernels. Ingesting generates Five Zang organs, supplements sinews and bones, adds blood and marrow, benefits spirit, increases wisdom, eyes see clearly for a thousand li, eliminates phthisis and masses, transforms mortal to immortal. If Wang Zijin, ingested for forty years, unconsciously flew into sky. Ding Lingwei ingested for twenty years, unconsciously flew. These two did not take other medicines, only raw Apricot Kernels. Such miraculous effects need not be cooked; raw generates Qi and strength quickly, cooked reduces efficacy by half. Apricot Kernel has ten names: one Changsheng Wan, two Qiansui Wan, three Huabai Ling Shao, fourquelao Wan, five Shentong Wansui Wan, six Dingjing Wan, seven Yijing Wan, eight Chaosheng Wan, nine Tonggu Qing Shen Wan, ten Lian Xingxin Jin Dan Wan. Their divided ingestion history is long. Apricot Kernel nature is neither cold nor hot, no taboos, does not conflict with other medicines. Only avoid unpolished rice, white glutinous rice, sweet porridge. Avoid eating these; slight discomfort occurs, resolves quickly. If traveling, might not follow method perfectly. If encountering white glutinous rice sweet porridge, let it cool, eat any amount without harm, only avoid this porridge, otherwise no hindrance. Apricot Kernel nature is warm and neutral, slightly bitter, later becomes sweet. After three years, no longer taste bitter, only sweet. Not only directs Qi downward, removes upper chest heat, strengthens waist and legs. Users know themselves. Take raw Apricot Kernels, remove skin, tips, double kernels. Yellow ones are best. At dawn, on empty stomach before brushing teeth, take fourteen (two sevens). Remove skin and tips in mouth, chew thoroughly until half mouthful of saliva, then swallow. After walking one li, eat any food. If only seeking longevity, eat meat and pungent foods freely. If seeking ascension, avoid all meat and pungent foods. Keep wives and children, engage in ordinary labor. Meat spoils easily, thus not beneficial to body. Daoist path avoids meat; cutting meat makes Daoist path easier. Regularly ingest raw Apricot Kernels: one year, hundred diseases remove; two years, body light, eyes bright, see ten li; extend life fifty years; six years, flesh and bone replace, face like peach red, reach age seventy; seven years, run as fast as horses, old teeth regrow; eight years, attended by jade girls, reach 150 years; nine years, hear palace bells, prolong life 300 years; ten years, life equals sun and moon; fifteen years, if eating meat/blood, cannot hear [immortals]; twenty years, body floats in void, nowhere to return; thirty years, Daoist path complete, immortals welcome. If cutting wives, meat, blood, five pungents, nutrition, ingest for two years, immortals welcome, ascend in daylight.
