*Suwen* states: Generally, various wind diseases causing limb tremors, dizziness, stiffness, spasms, as well as limb pain and tendon contraction, belong to the category of Wind-Wood of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian, which is due to pathogenic factors affecting the Qi of the Liver and Gallbladder. The characteristic of Wind is movement; trembling refers to shaking. When Wind-Qi is excessive, causing dizziness and vertigo of the head and eyes, it is because the Wood element is in a state of prosperity. This occurs because Metal Qi is deficient and fails to control Wood, while Wood generates Fire. Therefore, Wind and Fire often transform into Heat syndromes, representing an excess of Yang-Heat. Contracting Wind pathogens can result in alternating chills and fever, internal heat (Re Zhong), internal cold (Han Zhong), leprosy-like conditions (Li Feng), hemiplegia (Pian Ku), stiffness and pain of the waist and spine, tinnitus, or nasal congestion. Although these symptoms may coexist, the diseases vary, and their names differ. Medical classics state: "Wind is agile and changes rapidly." When the interstices (Cou Li) are open, one feels chilly; when closed, one feels hot and stifled. Wind pathogens enter the body and travel between the meridians and muscle intervals, interfering with Defensive Qi (Wei Qi), leading to obstruction of the pathways. This causes muscle swelling and the formation of sores. When Defensive Qi stagnates and fails to circulate, muscles become insensible (numb). In the muscle intervals where Defensive Qi travels, Wind and Defensive Qi contend and move together within the flesh, causing the Qi pathway to be sluggish and obstructed. Obstruction of the Qi pathway leads to the internal stagnation of Wind-Heat. As Defensive Qi and Wind contend, muscles swell and sores erupt. Defensive Qi, constrained by Wind, cannot disseminate; partial rising and stagnation prevent circulation, resulting in muscle insensibility. This means the skin and muscles are numb, unable to perceive cold, heat, pain, or itch, feeling like wood or stone. The classics say: "Wind is the chief of all diseases." Its transformations are unpredictable, giving rise to other illnesses due to the manifestation of Wind pathogens. Due to the myriad changes of the four seasons and the Six Qi and Five Movements, pushing and striking endlessly, how could Wind cease simply because the season is lost? Thus, contracting Wind on Jia-Yi days in Spring results in Liver Wind; on Bing-Ding days in Summer, Heart Wind; on Wu-Ji days in Late Summer, Spleen Wind; on Geng-Xin days in Autumn, Lung Wind; and on Ren-Gui days in Winter, Kidney Wind. The manifestations of Wind in the five Zang organs differ. Lung Wind presents with profuse sweating, aversion to wind, pale complexion, frequent coughing, shortness of breath, mild symptoms during the day, and worsening in the evening. Heart Wind shares similar features but includes irritability, red complexion, and difficulty speaking clearly when severe. Liver Wind involves sadness, slightly blue-green complexion, dry throat, irritability, and occasional aversion to women. Spleen Wind manifests as bodily fatigue, flaccidity of the limbs, pale yellow complexion, and loss of appetite. Kidney Wind presents with facial edema resembling warts, back pain preventing upright standing, dark complexion, and difficult urination. Furthermore, at the onset of cold, wind, and heat diseases, the internal organs are affected by Wind. Fire and Heat are the root of Yang; the *Neijing* states that bending, straightening, moving, and shaking belong to the dynamics of Wind. Dizziness and vomiting indicate severe Wind-Heat. Wind-Heat stagnation generates Wind-Fire from Heat; Heat is the root, and Wind is the branch. Any mention of Wind disease refers to Wind-Heat disease. Qi stagnation leads to tendon and vessel spasm and fatigue, emaciation and flaccidity of limbs, dizziness, stiff neck and back, tinnitus, nasal congestion, bitter taste, dry tongue, pharyngeal discomfort, chest oppression, cough, vomiting, asthma, and fullness, thick sputum, dry-heat and stagnation in the intestines and stomach, dysuria, night sweats, teeth grinding, sleep-talking, muscle twitching, and palpitations. Intestinal and stomach stagnation may prevent fluids from moistening the body, leading to excessive urination; or damp-heat accumulation may cause diarrhea; fluid depletion may lead to dry dysuria; or intestinal dryness prevents fluid distribution to the exterior, causing dampness retention and diarrhea; alternation of dryness and dampness may cause intermittent constipation and diarrhea; or exterior Yang harmonizes with Zheng Qi (Defensive Qi), which combines with pathogenic Heat entering the interior, leading to extreme Yang mimicking Yin with chills, restlessness, and thirst. Exterior cold causes chills; interior heat causes thirst. Chronic deficiency Qi may persist; classics state that when pathogenic Heat and Defensive Qi enter the interior, chills occur; when they emerge to the exterior, fever occurs. Their combination triggers illness; separation ends it. Wind-Heat migration may cause pain and numbness; Kidney Water (True Yin) deficiency with blazing Heart Fire may cause collapse; sudden stroke may cause prolonged aphasia; sudden hoarseness or inability to speak; hidden wind epilepsy; headache wind; trauma-induced tetanus; various convulsions in stroke; pediatric malnutrition heat; fright-wind heat; indistinguishable typhoid or epidemic febrile diseases; severe heat stagnation with ineffective sweating; black depression indicating imminent death; adult and pediatric wind-heat sores and scabies; persistent scalp scaling; generalized black-purple mottling; purple-red acne and urticaria on face and nose (commonly called wine rosacea); leprosy (Great Wind Disease); intestinal wind hemorrhoids and fistulas; detoxification for alcohol excess; relief from various pathogenic injuries; regulation after sweating in cold damage with residual head, neck, and body pain; and complex simultaneous exterior-interior syndromes. It also treats postpartum blood deficiency leading to Yin depletion and Yang stagnation, causing various heat syndromes, abdominal distension and painful stagnation, restlessness, thirst, asthma, oppression, delirium, and madness. Extreme heat generating Wind, with Wind-Heat dryness and stagnation, causes stiff tongue and locked jaw, muscle twitching. For all Wind-Heat dryness syndromes with stagnation preventing the expulsion of foul matter, abdominal distension, cramping pain, and coma, or excessive foul matter without vomiting, this formula is not suitable. It also eliminates minor and major sores and toxic infections, treats pain from falls and fractures, heat-induced urinary/fecal retention, acute abdominal/lumbar pain, and abdominal distension with asthma. These various wind inducements require treatment according to specific syndromes.
