Ingredients: Xi Ya Cha (Fine Bud Tea, 0.5 jin), Chuan Baiyao Jian (Prepared Cathartics, 5 pieces, burnt until carbonized but retaining efficacy). Grind into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with rice soup. Can also be taken with Wumei Tang (Mume Fruit Decoction).
Clinical Case of Warming the Middle and Replenishing Qi [Source: *Weisheng Baojian*]
Prime Minister Shi, aged 67, in September of the Dingmao year of Zhiyuan, suffered from spontaneous diarrhea due to internal injury multiple times. He felt heavy limbs, excessive sleepiness, and reluctance to speak. His pulse was deep, fine, and slightly wiry. He had no appetite; upon eating, he vomited. The middle qi was disordered, with stagnation in ascending and descending movements. His mouth and tongue were dry, head and eyes were dizzy and stuffy, and limbs were fatigued.
Treatment principle: Urgently use sweet herbs to relieve spasms. Furthermore, for insufficiency of the Spleen, tonify with sweet flavors. Thus, Huangqi (Astragali Radix) and Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), being sweet, tonify the Spleen and moderate the middle, serving as the Sovereign (Jun) herbs. For insufficiency of form, warm with qi. Thus, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) is acrid and warm to harmonize blood and moisten dryness; Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) is acrid and warm to regulate stagnant qi; Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Yizhiren (Semen Alpiniae Oxyphyllae), and Caodoukou Ren (Cardamomi Fructus) are acrid, sweet, and greatly hot to dispel middle jiao cold and rectify upright qi. Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) are sweet, bitter, and warm to thicken the intestines and stomach; Maimian (Tritici Farina) broadens the intestines and stomach and harmonizes; Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) eliminates stagnation and digests food, serving as Assistant (Zuo) herbs. One liang of the above herbs, coarsely crushed, is decocted in water and taken. Vomiting ceased, diet improved, and after three days all previous symptoms disappeared.
Later inquiry: Although previous symptoms resolved, there was no bowel movement for nine days. How to treat? Response: The Prime Minister is old with weak qi. Having suffered diarrhea and sweating, his spleen and stomach are insufficient, yang qi is damaged, and body fluids fail to moisten. How dare we use cold, cool, toxic purgatives? Zhang Zhongjing stated: After severe sweating, if urine is frequent and stool is hard, Chengqi Tang cannot be used; instead, honey suppositories can be used. Soon, more than twenty pieces of dry stool were expelled, and he felt relief in the empty abdomen, with upper and lower qi harmonized. He then took the previous medicine, regained appetite, and gradually recovered. Subsequently, Ju Pi Zhi Zhu Wan (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae and Atractylodes Pill) was used to guide out stagnation. After more than a month, he fully recovered.
The Prime Minister asked: Since the illness has passed, what medicine should I take to prevent recurrence? I replied: Not so. Guard speech, regulate diet, and do not take medicine. Using medicine is like using punishment. If people commit crimes, they are punished; if the body has disease, it is medicated. Unjustly punishing the innocent is called oppressing the people; medicating without disease harms upright qi. Military strategy states: When appropriate, return to service and cease treatment. The Prime Minister was pleased and agreed.
