[Supplementary Discussion]
The condition known as Shu Lou (Rat Fistula, a chronic ulcerative disease characterized by swollen and suppurating lymph nodes in the neck and axilla) arises from unclean diet. Toxin changes from insects and maggots invade the Zang-Fu organs, emerge into the meridians, and remain stagnant within the vessels without departing, causing chills and fever. The root of the disease lies in the Stomach, and the lesions manifest between the neck and axilla. If the swelling floats within the vessels but has not yet penetrated deeply into the muscles, and externally presents as pus and blood, it is easy to treat.
Formulas
Huang Qi San (Cistanche Powder, cited from *Shengji Zonglu*), treating Rat Fistula.
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, sliced), Bai Fan (Alumen, calcined to ash), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed, skin and umbilicus removed, half tael each), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, sliced and dried), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, twigs removed), Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix), Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, black heart removed), Li Gu (Vulpis Os), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, two taels each), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, sliced and stir-fried), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed), Lu Feng Fang (Vespa's Nest, roasted, one tael each), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, seedlings removed, one tael), Ban Mao (Mylabris), Yuan Qing (Lytta). These two herbs should have wings and feet removed and be stir-fried with glutinous rice, five pieces each. Grind all ingredients into powder. Take one qian bi per dose, mixed with warm wine on an empty stomach, twice daily.
Li Gu Zhi Mu San (Vulpis Os and Anemarrhenae Powder, cited from *Qianjin Fang*), treating Rat Fistula. It initially appears on the neck, without distinct head or tail, resembling a small mouse, causing chills, fever, and emaciation. This results from ingesting food contaminated with rat toxins that were not expelled; the root lies in the Stomach. Vulpis Os serves as the principal herb, and Anemarrhenae Radix as the assistant.
