When the nose is harmonious, one can distinguish between fragrant and foul odors. The nose is the orifice of the Lung (Zang-organ: Lungs); it cannot harmonize itself. It requires the free flow of Lung Qi to function properly, thereby enabling the discrimination of scents. If heat from the Heart meridian transfers to the Lung, causing disharmony of the Lung organ, the orifice will fail to ventilate and diffuse. Consequently, nasal polyps (growths in the nose) arise. This corresponds to what the *Neijing* states: "When there is disease in the Heart and Lungs, the Qi of the nose becomes obstructed, leading to an inability to distinguish scents, nasal congestion, and the formation of polyps."
