Treats vomiting caused by stomach heat.
Puerariae Radix (3 liang) Licorice Root (3 fen, honey-fried) Pinelliae Rhizoma (3 fen, boiled with half a cup of ginger juice and one sheng of fermented grain water until the volume is halved)
Crush the above ingredients into coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose, add two zhan of water, three slices of fresh ginger, a piece of Bamboo Shavings (Zhu Ru) the size of a bullet, and one jujube. Decoct together until one zhan remains, strain, and take warm.
Stomach heat is characterized by heat in the palms and soles. During the Zhenghe era, a clansman suffered from Cold Damage (Shanghan). After sweating, his body cooled down, but a few days later he suddenly began vomiting, unable to keep down any medicine or food.
Physicians all prescribed drugs such as Clove (Dingxiang), Agastache (Huoxiang), and Talcum (Huashi), but upon swallowing, the medicine was immediately vomited out. I said: "This is exactly residual heat remaining in the epigastrium after sweating; Sun Zhao's Bamboo Shavings Decoction (Zhuru Tang) is precisely indicated." I hastily prepared the medicine for him, and he recovered immediately. The Huaihua San (Sophora Flower Powder) from *Liang Fang* is also similar.
Treats hot vomiting.
Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit (Saojiao) (skin removed, burned until smoke ceases) Alum (Baimingfan) (calcined) Sophora Flower (Huaihua) (stir-fried until yellow-black) Licorice Root (Gancao) (honey-fried)
The above four ingredients are equal in proportion, ground into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with plain boiled water.
Li Shijun once suffered from vomiting; he would vomit after every meal for two months. Taking medicines for retching made the condition worse. Some suggested phlegm-fluid retention and administered herbs like Pinellia and Inula, but none were effective. An official in Li's staff introduced this prescription, and he recovered immediately.
An old female servant who had long suffered from vomiting also recovered after taking this medicine. Generally, vomiting is mostly due to heat in the diaphragm; heat generates phlegm-fluid. This medicine can resolve the heat-phlegm-fluid in the stomach and diaphragm, possessing special efficacy.
Treats persistent vomiting and diarrhea due to Cholera-like disease (Huanluan) accompanied by muscle cramps (Zhuanjin), when other medicines have failed; one pill treats one person.
Realgar? No, Sulfur (Liuhuang) (1 liang, ground) Mercury (Shuiyin) (8 qian)
Fry these two ingredients in a small crucible, stirring constantly with a willow wood spatula. Frequently spray with cold vinegar using a willow branch. Wait until it turns iron-colored. The method is the same as that for making Qingjin Dan (Blue Gold Pill). Scrape off, grind again into powder. Keep a small portion as a powder; for the rest, mix with three tips of Zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) and about half a cup of vinegar, grinding to a proper consistency to form a paste, then shape into pills the size of a chicken head. Coat with Cinnabar (Zhusha).
Take one pill per dose, dissolve in decocted Clove Water (Dingxiang Tang), and take warm. If taking the powder, mix 1 qian with Dingxiang Tang.
For Cold Damage where yin and yang clash and lie dormant, grind with Borneol (Longnao) and cold water to administer, two to three times daily.
