Generally, treating accumulations involves attacking them with substances the patient dislikes and enticing them with substances the patient likes, which facilitates healing. For example, using Naocha (Nao Sha) and Hydrargyrum (Shuiyin) for flesh accumulation; Shenqu Maiya (Medicated Leaven and Malt) for wine accumulation; Hirudo (Shuizhi) and Blepharipa (Mengchong) for blood accumulation; Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) and Arecae Semen (Binglang) for qi accumulation; Pharbitidis Semen (Qianniu) and Euphorbiae Humifusa Radix (Gansui) for water accumulation; Realgar (Xionghuang) and Calomelas (Nifen) for saliva/phlegm accumulation; Lapis Malachitae (Mengshi) and Crotonis Fructus (Badou) for food accumulation. Each is treated according to its specific nature. If a mixture of drugs is used, dispersing their potency makes it difficult to achieve efficacy. Xu Sizong stated: This is like hunting without knowing where the rabbit is, spreading a net over vast fields hoping to catch one; such methods are too crude. One must clearly identify the type of accumulation before adjusting the medication accordingly. Otherwise, harm may result. Xu Sizong claimed he did not write books, advocating for flexibility in clinical practice.
