Treating lower back pain caused by Kidney deficiency.
Lu Rong (Deer Antler Glue) in any quantity, sliced, roasted with butter until yellow, and ground into powder. Form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed using wine paste as a binder. Take 30–50 pills on an empty stomach before meals, washed down with salt water.
Treating lower back and leg pain with Qi stagnation.
Qian Niu Zi (Pharbitis Seed) in any quantity. Place in a new tile and roast over high fire until the tile is red-hot. Immediately place the Qian Niu Zi onto the hot tile; naturally, half will remain raw and half cooked. Do not stir. Take 1 liang of the powder, add 1 fen of finely ground Liu Huang (Sulfur), and grind them together uniformly. Divide into three portions. For each dose, take one spoonful of white flour, mix with water, roll out, and cut into chess-piece shapes. At dawn (Wu Geng), boil in one cup of water until cooked. Take warm with the soup. Stop when symptoms cease; if not ceased, repeat every other day. I once suffered from this ailment; each time it flared up, a single dose stopped the pain. *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: Lower back and leg pain may result from falls or injuries to the waist, causing pain.
*Wan Jin Fang* treats ten types of Water Qi disorders.
Yu Yu Liang (Hematitum) (3 liang). Zhen Sha (Magnetitum) (5 liang, must be genuine; market items often contain mixed sand and iron filings, so careful selection is required. First, wash thoroughly with water, drain, and dry in a crucible. Then, combine with Yu Yu Liang and cook in 3 sheng of sour vinegar directly in the crucible until the vinegar evaporates completely. Next, place the crucible and charcoal fire together to burn the two substances until the crucible is red-hot like the charcoal. Sweep clean a brick floor, pour the medicine onto it to cool, then grind together until no sound is heard, ensuring it is extremely fine like powder.) She Huang (Pyritum) (3 liang, large pieces. Place in a new iron crucible and burn in charcoal fire until the She Huang and crucible are red-hot. Remove the crucible with iron tongs and immediately pour the She Huang into 2 sheng of sour rice vinegar. After cooling, remove and grind until no sound is heard, ensuring it is extremely fine like powder.)
Treatments for Water Qi disorders mostly use cold purgatives. This formula, however, relies primarily on these three ingredients. Unlike Da Ji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix), Gan Sui (Kansui Radix), Ting Li (Lepidii Semen), or Yuan Hua (Genkwa Flos), it allows for dosage adjustment based on the patient's deficiency/excess and age/strength. Sixteen additional herbs are added to support healthy Qi, making it suitable even for the elderly and extremely weak.
Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (crushed, fried). Rou Dou Kou (Myristicae Semen) (wrapped in flour, processed). Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (remove root head, wash, crush, soak in wine overnight). Bai Fu Ling (Poria) Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (crush, lightly fry). Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (lightly fry). Bai Ji Li (Tribuli Fructus) (fry, remove spines). Guan Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (remove rough bark, avoid direct fire). Jing San Leng (Bistortae Rhizoma) (processed). Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (processed). Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). Hui Xiang (Foeniculi Fructus) (lightly fry). Qing Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (remove pith, fry). Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (process, remove skin and navel). Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (remove sprouts, soak in wine overnight, bake). E Zhu (Curcumae Rhizoma) (process). The above [herbs] are each 0.5 liang. For deficient persons and the elderly, use the full 0.5 liang; for those with robust Qi and blood, reduce the amount. Adjust according to judgment, and add to the first three main ingredients.
Mix all ingredients thoroughly. Soak steamed leavened bread in hot water, wring out excess moisture, mix with the herbs, and pound until extremely uniform. Form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take 30–50 pills on an empty stomach before meals, washed down with warm wine or plain water. Strictly avoid salt for three months; not even a trace should enter the mouth. If food lacks flavor, after the Water Qi disorder is resolved, a small amount of vinegar can be used to season food.
This formula was transmitted by Master Zhan Xin of Xianju. If patients cannot abstain from salt, they should not take it, as it will be futile. To truly cure the disease, prevent death, and seek life, one must strictly abstain from salt and take the medicine with sincerity. It does not damage the Zang-Fu organs but rapidly eliminates water through urination. In the early stage of the disease, take 1 liang of this medicine daily, combined with decoctions that warm and tonify Spleen Yuan Qi and Blood/Qi, leading naturally to recovery. This formula appears in *Yang Shi Jia Cang Fang* from Dangtu and *Yi Ling Ji Yan Fang*, where it is called Yu Yu Liang Wan. Yu Yu Liang is also known as Shi Zhong Huang; although the names differ, the formulas are essentially the same, except this one lacks Bai Zhu. However, it should be used. Li Songnian, Military Supervisor of Yuezhou, suffered from Water Qi disorder. Chen Junzi, Vice Prefect, prescribed this to him. The illness was cured before the course of treatment was completed.
