My maternal grandfather, Mr. Zhang Jingyue, was named Jiebin, with the courtesy name Huiqing. His ancestors had resided for generations in Mianzhu County, Sichuan Province. In the early Ming Dynasty, due to military merit, he was hereditarily appointed as Commander of Shaoxing Guard (Shaoxing Wei), and thus chose to settle in the eastern part of Kuaiji, the commandery capital. He was naturally gifted; when studying, he did not stick to chapter-and-verse exegesis. He was particularly proficient and well-versed in both military strategy (Taoling) and medicine (Xuanqi). In his prime, he traveled through the Yan and Ji regions, serving in military camps. He passed through Yuguan, climbed Jieshi, went through Fengcheng, and crossed the Yalu River. After residing there for several years without achieving much, and seeing his parents grow older and his family poorer, he returned home abruptly. His ambitions for fame and success were worn down, so he abandoned his previous studies and devoted himself entirely to medicine. He explored profound medical principles, his medical skills advanced daily, and his reputation grew prominent. People of his time compared him to Zhang Zhongjing and Li Dongyuan. With great determination, he edited the *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon), analyzing it meticulously throughout the year, and compiled it into several volumes of *Leijing* (Classified Classic), which were published and long regarded by the world as precious classics (Jingui Yuhan). The *Jingyue Quanshu* (Complete Works of Jingyue) extensively collected the essential insights of predecessors, tested and verified the subtle nuances of his own understanding, thereby establishing a school of thought of its own. It begins with *Chuanzhong Lu* (Record of Passing on Loyalty), which generally discusses Yin-Yang and the Six Qi (Six Atmospheric Influences), commenting on the views of sages, in three volumes. Next is *Maishen Zhang* (Chapter on Pulse Spirit), selecting the precious essences from various schools to diagnose diseases, in two volumes. Treatises on Cold Damage (Shanghan) serve as models, miscellaneous diseases as strategies, gynecology as regulations, pediatrics as standards, smallpox/rash diseases as interpretations, and surgery as rules, totaling forty volumes. Three hundred medicinal substances are collected; Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudi), and Rheum Palmatum Rhizoma et Radix (Dahuang) are regarded as the "Four Pillars" among medicines. Furthermore, Ginseng Radix (Renshen) and Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudi) are promoted as virtuous ministers, while Rheum Palmatum Rhizoma et Radix (Dahuang) and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) as virtuous generals, in two volumes. New prescriptions are created and divided into Eight Formations (Bazhen): Tonifying (Bu), Harmonizing (He), Cooling (Han), Heating (Re), Astringing (Gu), Following/Adapting (Yin), Attacking (Gong), and Dispersing (San), named Xin Fang Ba Zhen (Eight Formations of New Prescriptions), in forty volumes. Ancient prescriptions are collected and also divided into Eight Formations, named Gu Fang Ba Zhen (Eight Formations of Ancient Prescriptions), in eight volumes. Additionally, prescriptions for gynecology, pediatrics, smallpox/rash diseases, and surgery are separately compiled, all essentially varying from the Eight Formations of Ancient Prescriptions to mystify their application, in four volumes. In total, sixty-four volumes, named *Jingyue Quanshu*. This book inherits the past and opens up the future; is its merit insignificant? Using military tactics to deploy strategies reflects the ancient saying that prescribing medicine is like using troops. Some say that since my grandfather was skilled in military strategy but could not fulfill his ambition of studying in youth and acting in adulthood, he placed his intent in medicine to vent his diverse and奇 (miraculous/strange) talents. I say: This must be due to Heaven's will, specifically allowing his talent to mature late, to save the world and inherit the essence of the medical lineage. Was this not the intention of the Creator? This compilation was completed in his later years, but he lacked the funds for printing. He entrusted it to my father, who then passed it to Riwei. What kind of person am I to continue my ancestor's legacy? In the Gengchen year, I carried the manuscript to Guangdong East, presenting it to Governor Lu. He said: This is the boat of compassion saving the world! A treasure of the world should be shared with the world. He donated his salary for printing. After several months, the work was completed. Though unworthy, I could comfort my ancestors and console my maternal grandfather in the nine springs, ensuring his immortality. Postscript by Maternal Grandson Lin Riwei
