[Tao Ren (Peach Seed)]
Bitter, sweet, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Remove the skin and sharp ends. When used raw, it harmonizes blood; when stir-fried with skin and ends, it breaks blood stasis. Stir-fried with dry lacquer, it powerfully resolves old blood stasis. Peach kernels with two kernels are toxic and should not be used.
*Shennong Bencao Jing* states that it governs blood stasis, blood obstruction, zheng jia (abdominal masses), and evil qi, and kills three types of parasites.
[Invention/Commentary]
Tao Ren enters the blood aspect of the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian and Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian, serving as a specific drug for blood stasis and blood obstruction. Its bitterness drains stagnant blood, while its sweetness generates new blood; however, its blood-breaking efficacy predominates. This is evident from the indications in *Shennong Bencao Jing*, which shows that Zhang Zhongjing’s Taohe Chengqi Decoction (Peach Pit Draining the Lower Jiao Decoction) and Didang Tang (Wait-For-It Decoction) both utilize its blood-breaking properties. Furthermore, it treats heat entering the Blood Chamber causing blood accumulation, zheng jia, amenorrhea, nuomu (malaria spleen), heart and abdominal pain, and large intestine constipation, all by dispersing blood knots in the Liver Meridian. When roasted until fragrant, it treats hernia pain and itching, a method from *Qianjin Fang*. The fruit of the peach is sweet and sour; excessive consumption causes abdominal heat and diarrhea. Taonu (dried peaches remaining on the tree) expels evil spirits and entities, treating sudden severe abdominal pain, blood stasis syndromes, and hard accumulations; to break blood, grind with wine and take; to stop bleeding, burn to ash and take. The gum from the peach tree best promotes fluid circulation, treating blood strangury, stone strangury, and black depression of smallpox lesions; Bisheng Ointment uses it. Tao Ye (Peach Leaf) treats chuan shi lao (consumptive disease like tuberculosis); there is a water-processing method: use one dou of peach leaves, two liang each of Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf) and Houpo (Magnolia Bark), place them in two bags, boil with several jin of strong liquor, alternately boil the medicine, and apply hot compresses to the patient's back until the liquor is exhausted. Within three applications, the pathogenic worms are permanently eradicated. Additionally, for small insects in sores, crush and apply topically.
[Li (Chestnut)]
Salty, warm in nature, non-toxic.
[Invention/Commentary]
Li is the fruit of the Kidney, suitable for Kidney diseases. Dried chestnuts can be eaten directly. For acute diarrhea due to Spleen and Kidney deficiency-cold, they must be roasted or boiled before eating. Li Xi (the wedge-shaped kernel inside the shell), where one ball contains three kernels, specifically the flattened one, treats wind-pain in tendons and bones and breaks cold accumulation and癖块 (masses). Chewed raw and applied to malignant thorns (poisonous thorn injuries), it extracts arrowheads; the thin skin on the Li Xi meat is called Li Xi Pi. Burned to retain its medicinal property (charcoal form), it treats fishbones stuck in the throat; blowing it into the throat expels them. Li Qiao (Chestnut Shell) decocted in water treats regurgitation and Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome). Mao Qiu (the spiny outer husk) decocted in water washes Huo Dan Du Swelling. Li Hua (Chestnut Flower) treats Luo Li (scrofula). Li Shu Pi (Chestnut Tree Bark) decocted in water washes Sha Si Xi Du and Dan Du Chuang Du (erysipelas and sores). Li Gen (Chestnut Root) treated with wine decoction addresses Pian Zhui (hernia) and Shen Qi disorders.
