It is also known as Cao Zi He Che, Jin Xian Chong Lou, and commonly called Qi Ye Yi Zhi Hua (Seven Leaves One Flower).
Bitter in taste, slightly cold in nature, toxic.
*Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) states it governs jing xian (pediatric convulsions), head shaking, and tongue protrusion, as well as heat qi in the abdomen.
[Invention] Zao Xiu (Chong Lou/Paris polyphylla) is a herb of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. It can treat jing xian (pediatric convulsions), malaria, luo li (scrofula), and yong zhong (carbuncles and swellings). A detailed analysis of the indications in *Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* reveals that its primary action is to open stagnation and guide out heat, thereby naturally eliminating the pathogenic heat causing symptoms such as head shaking and tongue protrusion associated with jing xian. It is contraindicated for those with deficient Yang qi. Applied externally with vinegar paste, it is effective for treating yong zhong (carbuncles and swellings) and snake venom.
*Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* names it Jiu Jiu, also Tian Jiu, or Ma Mu Du Gong. Other names include Shu Lv Cao, Hai Mu Cao, Du Jiao Lian, Xiu Tian Hua, Qiong Tian Cao, Shan He Ye, Ba Jiao Pan, Tang Po Jing, Gui Yao, Jue Xi, and Jie Du.
Pungent in taste, warm in nature, toxic.
*Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* records its ability to kill insect poisons, gui zhu jing wu (pathogenic spirits and infectious diseases like guizhu), repel evil qi and inauspicious influences, drive out pathogenic factors, and resolve hundred toxins.
[Invention] Gui Jiu (Podophyllum emodi) is pungent and warm, a potent herb that uses toxicity to combat toxicity. The record in *Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* regarding killing gui zhu insect poisons and repelling evil suggests an intention where the name matches the reality. It is used to treat pathogenic carbuncles, yin ju (cold abscesses), and snake venom. In *Liang Fang*, "Yi Zi Shen San" (One-Character Divine Powder) treats retained dead fetus in the uterus; taken with one qian using wine without sediment, it produces immediate effect. For injuries from She Gong Zhong (water bugs causing erysipelas-like lesions) presenting with chills, fever, and sores, take a handful of Gui Jiu leaves, crush with vinegar to extract juice, and drink one sheng twice daily for effectiveness.
*Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* names it Wu Shan. Its leaves grow in clusters, spreading horizontally on one side resembling bird wings or fans, hence names such as Wu Sha, Wu Chui, Wu Pu, Feng Yi, Gui Shan, Bian Zhu, and Zhang Xian Zhang.
Bitter and pungent in taste, slightly warm in nature, toxic. Soak in rice wash water, boil until cooked, then stir-fry before use.
*Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* states it governs ke ni shang qi (cough with rebellious qi), hou bi (sore throat with obstruction), yan tong (throat pain), inability to breathe freely, dissipates stagnant qi, treats abdominal rebellious qi, and excessive heat from food and drink retention.
[Invention] Bitterness can drain downward, while pungency can disperse upward. In treating ke ni shang qi, hou bi, yan tong, and breathing difficulty, *Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* specifically utilizes its function of dissipating stagnant qi, making it a key herb for hou bi and yan tong. For throat pain during smallpox/variolous eruptions, it yields quick results because its strength can resolve toxic stagnation. Treating abdominal rebellious qi and excessive heat from diet refers to internal heat caused by old blood stasis, which corresponds to the statement in *Bie Lu* (Additional Records) about treating old blood in the heart and spleen. *Jin Gui Yao Lue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet) treats cough with rebellious qi and a sound like a water chicken in the throat using She Gan Ma Huang Tang (Belamcanda and Ephedra Decoction). It also treats nuo mu (malaria mass/splenomegaly); in Bie Jia Jian Wan (Turtle Shell Decoction), Wu Shan (She Gan) is roasted to utilize its ability to descend the ministerial fire of the Jueyin meridian. When the fire descends, blood disperses, swelling subsides, and phlegm nodules resolve naturally. *Qian Jin* (Thousand Gold Formulas) contains Wu Shan Gao for treating hou bi. For sores caused by She Gong poison, Wu Shan and Sheng Ma are decocted and taken orally, with the dregs applied topically to the sore for effectiveness. To treat bian du (buboes/gonococcal lymphadenitis), decoct She Gan with fresh ginger; taking it leads to two or three bowel movements and rapid improvement. Because its nature is good at descending, it inevitably causes diarrhea upon ingestion, and it is contraindicated for persons with deficiency. Its seedling is named Yuan Wei (Iris tectorum), its root is named Yuan Tou, also known as Dong Hai Yuan Tou. It is used in formulas for gu du (gu poisoning) in *Qian Jin*.
