[Lu Feng Fang (Honeycomb of the Dew Bee)]
Bitter, salty, neutral, toxic.
*Shennong Bencao Jing* records its indications for jing xian convulsions (convulsions due to fright), chan rong spasms (spasms with eyes rolling back), cold-heat pathogenic factors, dian ji epilepsy (epilepsy and mental disorders), gui jing (spiritual anomalies or parasitic diseases), gu du poisoning (poisoning from accumulated toxins), chang zhi intestinal hemorrhoids, and recommends fire roasting for optimal efficacy.
[Invention] Lu Feng Fang is a herb entering the Yangming meridian. *Shennong Bencao Jing* treats jing xian convulsions, dian ji epilepsy, cold-heat pathogenic factors, gu du poisoning, and chang zhi intestinal hemorrhoids because it can dispel and cleanse phlegm turbidity. Its use in sores, ulcers, toothache, and other diseases relies on its ability to attack toxicity with toxicity and eliminate parasites.
[Wu Bei Zi (Galla Chinensis)]
Also known as Guo Luo, which refers to the potter wasp (fine-waisted bee).
Pungent, neutral, slightly toxic.
*Shennong Bencao Jing* records its treatment for chronic deafness, ni ke cough with reverse qi flow, du wa toxic vapors, and expelling splinters while inducing sweating.
[Invention] The *Classic of Poetry* states "The silkworm moth has offspring, the Guo Luo carries them," referring to the fine-waisted wasp capturing green worm larvae and transforming them into its own young through instruction. *Ri Hua Zi Bencao* records its treatment for ou ni vomiting and reverse qi flow. When ground raw, it can be applied to bamboo or wood splinters, which corresponds to the *Shennong Bencao Jing*'s mention of "expelling splinters and inducing sweating," utilizing its sharp toxicity to extrude the splinter.
[Lax Tree / White Wax]
Sweet, warm, non-toxic.
[Invention] The Lax tree belongs to Metal, possessing a nature specifically for astringency and strengthening. Its leaves treat sores and swelling; the substance formed by insects feeding on these leaves (white wax) is no different from Sang Piao Xiao (Mantis Egg Case), making it an essential external medicine. Combining it with He Huan Pi (Albizia Bark) in muscle-nourishing ointments yields miraculous effects. Currently, it is taken to treat Xia Gan (chancre); if unformed, it dissipates; if formed, it consolidates. Boiling half an ounce of white wax inside a crucian carp and consuming it is highly effective for treating Chang Hong (hematochezia/bloody stool).
[Zi Kuang / Zi Cao Rong (Mineral Lac)]
Also known as Zi Cao Rong (Purple Grass Felt).
Sweet, salty, neutral, slightly toxic.
[Invention] Zi Kuang is formed by ants aggregating the resinous fluid from the Qilin Jie tree (Dragon's Blood Tree), similar to how bees produce honey. Originating from Zhen La (Chenla, modern Cambodia) is superior, followed by Persian origin. Ancient formulas used it for five-zang pathogenic factors, jin chuang metal wounds, beng lou uterine bleeding, breaking up stagnant blood, generating flesh, and relieving pain. Modern usage focuses on treating smallpox/varioloid, promoting blood circulation to raise pustules, without the purgative side effect of salty-cold herbs. Its efficacy exceeds that of Zi Cao (Arnebia Root), hence the name Zi Cao Rong, though it is not related to Zi Cao.
[Bai Yao Jian (Decoction of Hundred Medicines)]
Also known as Chuan Wen Ge (Sichuan Clam).
Bitter, sour, salty, neutral, non-toxic. Produced in Sichuan-Shu region; those resembling water caltrops are best. Processed via fermentation method, it is named Bai Yao Jian. For every jin (500g) of Wu Bei Zi powder, add 1 liang (30g) each of Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), and Zhen Cha (True Tea) as powder, mix with 2 liang of fermented residue, store in bran until it rises like dough, then form into cakes and sun-dry.
[Invention] Chuan Wen Ge excels at astringing stubborn phlegm and resolving heat toxicity. Evening cough results from fire qi floating in the lungs; cool herbs should not be used. Instead, Wu Bei Zi and Wu Wei Zi should be used to astringe and descend. It is contraindicated in sudden cough caused by external wind-cold and in cases of excessive lung fire, as it only astringes and does not disperse. Therefore, patients with internal accumulation of phlegm-fluid who misuse it may suffer central stagnation leading to distension, closure, and death. Powdered externally, it treats prolapsed rectum and uterus. Bai Yao Jian has a floating nature and a lingering sweet taste, suitable for upper-jiao phlegm-cough and heat-thirst conditions, especially when held in the mouth. Excessive use primarily treats lower body bleeding, darkens hair, reduces swelling and toxicity, astringes metal wounds, and when sprinkled on throat obstruction and mouth sores, facilitates eating.
