(Shanghan Lun, Middle Category)
[Flavor and Nature] Pungent, bitter, slightly cold, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats breast pain in women after childbirth, seven injuries, leukorrhea, five types of leakage, stops pain, stops sweating, removes foul flesh, and treats metal wounds (traumas caused by metal weapons).
[Analysis] It is stated: Grows in plains and river marshes. In the third month, perennial roots sprout seedlings on the ground; a single stem grows straight upward, three to four chi high, with opposite pairs of green leaves that resemble elm leaves but are slightly narrower, slender and long, with serrated edges. Flowers bloom in the seventh month resembling mulberries; the root resembles willow, black on the outside and red inside. The root can be used to brew wine; Daoist formulas use it calcined to ash for boiling stones. It works well when combined with hair. It is incompatible with Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), and its effects are inhibited by Cinnabaris (Zhusha), Realgar (Xionghuang), and Sulfur (Liuhuang).
[Commentary] Earth represents the Kun principle; it is extremely soft yet moves with strength. Boiling stones into porridge demonstrates its hardness and movement. 'Yu' (elm) derives from 'Yu' (to convey/pass through), meaning wood hollowed out like a boat or raft, facilitating passage where there is blockage. Thus, it primarily treats obstruction of the vessel pathways, causing Ying blood unable to flow into the meridians and collaterals, resulting in conditions such as leukorrhea, five leakages, postpartum breast pain, and sweating, much like the utility of wooden boats.
(It serves not only as a boat but also as a carriage, both utilizing the utility of wood.)
(Shanghan Lun, Middle Category)
[Flavor and Nature] Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily nourishes and calms the five Zang organs, harmonizes the mind and spirit, making one joyful and free from worry. Long-term consumption lightens the body, brightens the eyes, and fulfills desires.
[Analysis] It is stated: Albizia julibrissin grows in the valleys of Yuzhou, as well as in Yizhou, Bian, and Luo regions, and is found in valleys wherever planted. Planting it in courtyards prevents resentment. Ji Kang's "Discourse on Nourishing Life" states: "Albizia eliminates resentment, daylily forgets sorrow." Ancient and Modern Notes state: "To eliminate resentment, gift Qing Shang. Qing Shang is Albizia; Yue people call it Wulai Tree; the Golden Light Sutra calls it Shili Sa Tree; commonly known as Mengge Tree." The trunk resembles Paulownia, branches very tender. Leaves resemble Sophora, fine and dense, interlocking; when wind blows, they separate naturally without tangling. Red and white flowers bloom in May, covered with silky fuzz. Pods form in autumn, seeds extremely thin and flat. Bark and leaves can be harvested at any time. For processing, scrape off the rough bark and slow-roast.
Ancestors said: Yang moves and opens; Yin is still and closes. This is ultimate harmony and peace. Movement leads to stillness; opening leads to closing. This is true harmony and peace. If movement cannot open, stillness cannot close, or movement cannot lead to stillness, opening cannot lead to closing, this is disharmony and unrest. Albizia expands Yang during the day and closes Yin at night; leaves interlock when still and do not tangle when moving. Opening, closing, movement, and stillness all fulfill their nature, achieving the correct balance of Yin and Yang, bringing both peace and harmony to humans...
[Commentary] Opening by day and closing by night uses day and night as respiration. It should calm the Yang of Heart and Lung, the Yin of Kidney and Liver, and soothe the Central Region, nourishing the Post-Heaven foundation. Harmonizing the mind to bring joy and freedom from worry occurs because when Zang organs are calm, Shen (Spirit) is calm; when Shen is calm, Yi (Will) overflows; when Yi overflows, there is no fear or sorrow. It resembles the circulation of Wei Qi, stabilizing Wei Qi's exit to Yang during the day and entry to Yin at night. It further calms the circulation of Ying Qi through the meridians and stabilizes the Central Region. Respiration aligns with Heaven and Earth; thus, long-term consumption lightens the body, brightens the eyes, and fulfills desires.
(Exhalation is governed by Heart and Lung; inhalation by Kidney and Liver. Between breaths, Spleen receives grain essence, its pulse located centrally. Spleen is the Central Region.)
(Only when Zang organs are calm and Heart is harmonious is there joy and freedom from worry. Only with joy and freedom from worry does the body become light and eyes clear over time, fulfilling desires. Depressed Qi causes heaviness; joy makes it light and soaring. Suppressed Liver Qi causes dim vision; joy clears and brightens it. Worried Heart cannot achieve wishes; joy allows following one's heart's desire, achieving everything.)
