(Shennong Bencao Jing, Upper Grade)
Possesses the image of height and brightness, and inherits the transformational decree of Cold Water.
[Flavor and Nature] Bitter, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats severe heat-induced fire sores, fever with restlessness, and evil qi (referring to pathogenic factors). The flowers primarily treat leukorrhea (vaginal discharge) in women, lighten the body, and brighten the eyes.
[Analysis] It is said: Jing Tian (Sedum aizoon), also known as Shen Huo (Caution Fire) or Jie Huo (Avoid Fire), is the same as Huo Dan Cao (Fire Erysipelas Herb). It grows in the valleys of Mount Tai and is now cultivated in both northern and southern regions. It is planted on eaves and roofs, it is said to ward off fire. In spring, shoots emerge, one to two chi high; the stems are yellowish-red, extremely fragile, exuding juice when broken; the leaves are pale green, resembling Portulaca oleracea (Ma Chi Xian), glossy, soft, dense, and growing in layers upwards. In summer, small red and white flowers bloom, bearing fruits similar to Forsythia suspensa (Lian Qiao) but smaller, containing black seeds like millet grains. After autumn, the stems wither, and next year the perennial roots sprout again.
(Shennong Bencao Jing, Upper Grade)
[Flavor and Nature] Pungent, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats severe traumatic injuries, tonifies the middle jiao, reconnects sinews and bones, fills the marrow and brain, calms the five zang organs, treats wu huan liu ji syndrome (five slacknesses and six tensions), and wind-cold-damp bi obstruction. Raw Qi (lacquer) eliminates long worms (parasites).
[Analysis] It is said: Those produced in Hanzhong, Jinzhou, and Liangzhou are of the best quality; those from Yizhou, Guangzhou, and Zhejiang are secondary. The tree grows several zhang high, the trunk resembles Diospyros kaki (Persimmon), leaves resemble Toona sinensis (Chun), flowers resemble Sophora japonica (Huai), and fruits resemble Naematolocus dodecandrus (Niu Nai Zi). In the fifth and sixth lunar months, the sap is tapped and dried to become Gan Qi (Dried Lacquer), which looks like a honeycomb with porous intervals. However, its nature is urgent and prone to drying/cracking; in hot weather, it is difficult to dry; without wind and in humid conditions, it cracks easily even in severe cold; otherwise, it is unsuitable for medicinal use. Processing involves crushing and stir-frying until cooked; otherwise, it damages the stomach and intestines. Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) serves as its guiding herb (shi). It fears chicken eggs and avoids grease. When combined with crab, it transforms into water.
[Analysis] It is said: During the three months of summer, the lacquer sap is sufficient, entering the Heart, because its color is vermilion and bright, and its nature is dry and urgent; thus, Ban Xia is used as the guiding herb. After drying, it enters the Kidney, because its color is dark/black with luster and it prefers yin and moisture; thus, it transforms into water when meeting crab. Entering the Kidney, it becomes the Heart medicine for the Kidney; entering the Heart, it becomes the Kidney medicine for the Heart. "Tonifying the middle" refers to tonifying the blood of the middle jiao, as blood is formed through transformations in the middle jiao. The Heart governs blood, and the Kidney governs fluids, hence this. Therefore, in cases where blood is dry and depleted, leading to slackness or tension of sinews and vessels, traumatic injuries, insufficient marrow and brain, unrest of the five zang organs, and bi obstruction, it is effective. The reconnection, filling, and stabilization of generalized bi pain are all achieved through the moistening and free flow of blood. Raw Qi eliminates long worms because it enters the Heart, thereby obtaining the great command of the Heart Sovereign Fire. Like a gathering of great fire, long worms naturally perish. (The state of flowing like water leakage is called Qi, possessing the form of water and the function of fire.)
