[Flavor and Nature] Bitter, astringent, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily astringes the intestines to stop diarrhea and dysentery, treats intestinal wind (blood in stool), metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, and nourishes blood.
[Analysis] States: Abundant in Sichuan and Guangdong, also found in Jiangnan. When first sprouting, leaves resemble Bletilla striata (Baiji), three to four chi high, with a straight trunk without branches. At the apex, several leaves spread out and split; the leaf color remains evergreen. Each growth node forms a layer, with veins and fibers interwoven like fabric. It can be used to make ropes or as padding for folding stools (Huchuang), durable and resistant to decay. However, it must be harvested three times a year, otherwise it ceases to grow. In March, yellow layered buds emerge at the tree tip, which are the gestation of flowers, commonly known as "Zongyu" or "Zongsun". In May, the buds open into flower spikes, yellowish-white in color, bearing abundant fruits that are green when raw and black when ripe, very tough.
[Eulogy] States: Zonglü belongs to the category of herbs and trees, yet is neither herb nor tree, but both—wood within grass, grass within wood. Its therapeutic efficacy is opposite to that of Anlü (Aristolochia debilis); while Anlü promotes the expulsion of stagnation, Zonglü retains what is leaking, hence named "Lü". "Lü" refers to the threshold or door panel. The character structure implies the image of closing (He).
(The veins and fibers are intricately woven, so orderly and dense, yet it expels stagnation? Why? Because the stagnant matter cannot be sorted and analyzed with such intricate order. Observing the leaves at the tip, spreading and splitting, each new layer forming a distinct segment with clear boundaries and proper branching, unlike chaotic retention.)

[Flavor and Nature] Sweet, slightly cold, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats alternating chills and fever in children, and twelve types of convulsive epilepsy.
[Analysis] States: Found in the mountains of Jianping, Qinzhou, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangnan, and Jiangxi. Resembles grapevines, vines eight to nine chi long, or up to two zhang, thick as a thumb and hollow inside. When broken and placed in a wine jar, it sucks up liquid via air pressure, flowing continuously. Stems have thorns resembling fishing hooks, color...
[Eulogy] States: Vines with thorns like hooks, hollow and unobstructed within, representing the image of Li (Fire/Brightness), using form to indicate function. The Classics state: Summer pulse resembles a hook, corresponding to Southern Fire.
...or if branch collaterals are crossed and disordered, causing twelve types of convulsive epilepsy manifesting as chills and fever, this herb can unblock and regulate them, restoring the endless cycle. If its application is expanded according to principles, its efficacy is truly inexhaustible. Limiting it solely to pediatric use would be undervaluing it, missing its grand potential.
(Placing the cut vine in a wine jar, sucking up liquid continuously via air pressure, commonly called "Guoshanlong". It not only unblocks Qi in the Twelve Meridians but also regulates fluids. Extending its use to branch collaterals, muscle textures, and fascia, its applications are truly inexhaustible.)
