(Shennong Bencao Jing, Middle Category)
Because the onset is sudden and violent, people are unaware of its origin.
[Flavor and Nature] Bitter, salty, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats sudden stroke (Bao Zhong Feng), fever, distension and fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, mental confusion or unconsciousness, madness, delirium, and pathogenic qi invasion; also treats alternating chills and fever, body aches; for warm malaria (Wen Nue) with shivering chills, occurring at fixed times.
[Verification] It is stated: Baiwei grows in Shaanxi, as well as in Shuzhou, Chuzhou, Runzhou, and Liao Zhou. Recently, those produced in Yizhou, Puzhou, Juzhou, and Laizhou in Shandong are considered superior. The stems and leaves are all green, resembling willow leaves. In June and July, it bears red flowers and subsequently produces fruit. The root resembles Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) but is finer, about one chi long. Those that are yellowish-white with a strong aromatic fragrance are Baiwei; those that are whitish-yellow and break easily are Baiqian (Cynanchi Stauntonii Radix). Processing method: Soak overnight in rice washing water, remove the root hairs, chop finely on a locust wood cutting board, steam from Shen hour to Si hour, then dry in the sun for use. It is incompatible with Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Daji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), Ganqi (Lacca Resina), and Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus).
[Interpretation] It is said: Baiwei, alias Baimu. "Bai" (White) represents the metal element's color, symbolizing a firm and rigid constitution. "Wei" (Micro/Subtle) means hidden, referring to moving while concealed. "Mu" (Curtain/Tent) refers to the military tent used for concealment during troop movements. This explains the name based on the conditions it can treat. Its nature is neutral, with bitter and salty flavors. Neutrality implies neither ascending nor descending, embodying the transformative virtue of Earth, thereby resisting what it cannot overcome (controlling the counter-restrictive cycle). Fire flares upward producing bitterness; bitter substances tend to descend, and bitterness can enter the bones. Water moistens downward producing saltiness; salty substances tend to enter the blood, and saltiness can strengthen the sinews/bones. The medicinal effect reaches from the crown of the head to the heels, penetrating the skin and marrow, reaching everywhere. This refers to the cause of what it overcomes (Metal controls Wood); wind moves swiftly and changes frequently, thus reaching everywhere. Therefore, it primarily treats symptoms caused by violent winds, such as fever and limb fullness where the pathogen hides, mental confusion/unconsciousness, madness, delirious pathogenic qi, alternating chills/fever, and body aches. This is because wind qi remains in place, so it "hides" and is constantly present. Or, due to moving while hidden, it causes warm malaria with shivering chills occurring at fixed times. This is because wind resides with Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), following Wei Qi's daytime movement in the Yang levels and nighttime movement in the Yin levels. The pathogen deeply invades internally, so attacks have a regular schedule, alternating between发作 (onset) and rest. These are all manifestations of violent, changing winds. Metal-type properties control them, i.e., controlling what they overcome (Wind/Wood). The *Bielu* states it treats strangury, seminal emission, and urinary incontinence, which is wind hiding in the Bladder. If there is fluid/qi damage and essence depletion, it is wind hiding in the Kidney, causing Kidney deficiency, essence exhaustion, and overflowing Kidney water. If one suddenly appears like a corpse, it is wind hiding in the Blood, causing Blood Jue (syncope). If warm disease involves excessive sleepiness, it is wind hiding in the meridians, preventing Wei Qi from moving in the Yang levels during the day. If there is spasm, wind hides in the sinews; if there is fright, wind movement causes Qi to rise. Since the cause is violent wind, cold-natured treatments are not suitable.
