[Shennong Bencao Jing, Middle Category]
[Flavor and Nature] Sour in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats women's genital erosion (yinshi), carbuncles, hemorrhoids, and foul blood; strengthens sinews and bones; cures alopecia capitis; can melt gold, silver, copper, iron, and other rare substances.
[Verification] It is stated: Shihuanghuang (Stalagmite Sulfur) originates from the Muye Valley of the East Sea, as well as the Taihang Mountains and Hexi Mountain regions. Currently, it is also produced in various countries of the South Sea and prefectures beyond the Lingnan region, but its quality does not compare to that from Kunlun, Yazhou, or those imported by ship. This is the essence of fire stone and the liquid of alum. Wherever it is found, there must be hot springs emitting the odor of Shihuanghuang. The best quality consists of granular blocks that are crystal clear, smooth and lustrous, yellow in color, and silent when chewed. Those mixed with soil and stones are unsuitable for medicinal use. One variety that is red is called Shitingzhi (Stone Ting Resin); one that is green is called Dongjieshi (Winter Stone); one that is goose-yellow is called Kunlunhuang (Kunlun Yellow); one that is half white and half black is called Shenjingstone (God-frightened Stone); none of these are suitable for use. There is another type called Shui-liu-huang (Flowing Water Sulfur), originating from Guangnan and Zizhou, flowing out from stream beds, collected with reeds and boiled to produce Zhenzhuhuang (Pearl Yellow), which has a very fishy and foul odor and can be used in sores medications. Another type is Tushihuang (Earth Sulfur), originating from Zhangzhou, Fujian. There is a mountain near the sea named Jilongtou (Chicken Cage Head). Sand and soil from the side of the mountain are scraped off, dried in the sun, fried and ground with beef tallow, filtered to remove sand and soil, and the clear juice is filtered out and dried to become Tushihuang, which is also excellent for medicinal use. Processing method: First, hollow out a radish (Laiwu), place the sulfur inside the hollow, secure it, and roast it over rice bran fire until cooked to remove its foul odor. Then, boil it with Zibei Fuping (Purple-backed Duckweed) for one day to eliminate its fire toxicity. Furthermore, wash it with decoction made from Gengjie (Gleditsia Sinensis) to remove the black slurry. Cengqing (Azurite) serves as the guiding herb (shi). It is incompatible with Xixin (Asarum), Feilian (Leontopodium), Puxiao (Mirabilite), iron vessels, and vinegar.
[Commentary] It is stated: Shihuanghuang predominantly possesses the fierce and robust nature of mountain rocks, taking Yangsui (ancient fire-starting mirror, symbolizing pure yang) as its substance and fluid movement as its function. Its qi inherits the warmth of fire, and its flavor combines the sourness of wood, likely because wood derives from fire and wind emerges from fire. It enters the Jueyin (Liver) meridian and is treated from the middle jiao; thus, it primarily treats yin erosion, carbuncles, hemorrhoids, and diseases caused by foul blood. When the body cannot nourish hair to make it beautiful or strengthen bones and soften sinews, these conditions all belong to severe Yin coagulation and hardness. Treating them oppositely leads to the principle that when Yang generates, Yin grows, and when Yang kills, Yin stores. (Above the Jueyin meridian, Wind Qi governs; internally connected to Shaoyang, which is Ministerial Fire.)
