(Recorded in the Middle Category of *Shennong Bencao Jing*)
[Flavor and Property] Sweet, neutral, toxic.
[Indications] Convulsive epilepsy (Jingxian), alternating cold and heat caused by pathogenic factors, manic-depressive psychosis (Dianji), "Ghost Essence" (Guijing, referring to disorders characterized by mental confusion or hallucinations), Gu poison (Gudu), intestinal hemorrhoids (Changzhi).
[Nucleus] Lu Zhiyi states: Lufengfang (Exposure Honeycomb), also known as Fengchang, Fengke, Baichuan, and Zijinsha. It grows in mountain valleys and is found everywhere. There are four types: The first is Gefengke (Leather Bee Comb), which can be one or two zhang long, wrapping around trees. Internally, small combs have 626 compartments, and large ones have 1,240 compartments. The substance adhering to the wooden stem is juice from Qigu wood; the cover is made from cow dung foam; the partitions are made from leaf stamens. The second is Shifengke (Stone Bee Comb), attached to human dwellings' roofs, size like a fist, color dark green-black. Inside are 21 or 14 green bees. The cover is stone scum, the adhesive part is Qigu wood juice, and the partitions are bamboo borings. The third is Dafengke (Solitary Bee Comb), size like a goose egg, thick skin, color dark yellow-green. Inside are small bees with heads and wings facing inward, with only one large bee remaining, resembling Shiyan (a type of fossilized bone/stone), occupying the exterior alone. If humans or horses are stung by it, death occurs immediately. The fourth is Caofengke (Grass Bee Comb), which is also used medicinally. Gefengke is considered superior; nowadays, people mostly use those on branches in front of eaves. Processing method: Steam together with Ya Dou Zhen (Crow Bean Pillow) etc., remove beans from Si hour to Wei hour, roast until loose and crisp for use.
[Commentary] Lu Zhiyi states: Huangfenglu (Yellow Bee Dew) resides in the "Xian" (Manifest/Open) position; its comb hangs upside down and rotates repeatedly. The Manifest becomes the "Mi" (Hidden/Dense); Bees retreat into concealment, their combs arranged horizontally in the four corners. The Hidden becomes Manifest. Movement becomes stillness, stillness becomes movement; opening becomes closing, closing becomes opening. Is this not the function of the Pivot (Shuji)? Therefore, when Qi ascends abnormally, there is fright (Jing); when Qi sinks abnormally, there is epilepsy (Xian). Reversal of opening and closing leads to convulsions (Chouyue); disorder of Yin and Yang leads to alternating cold and heat. Excess Yang results in mania (Kuang); excess Yin results in depression (Dian). Having Yin without Yang results in Guijing; having Yang without Yin results in Gudu. Manifest and Hidden transform into each other; distribution (Xingbu) does not hinder circulation (Yuantong), and circulation does not hinder distribution. As for Changpi transforming into hemorrhoids, the method of "treating obstruction with unblocking agents" (Tongyin Saiyong) is applied. The hundred perforations of Fengchang illustrate the method of morphological correspondence (Xiangxing Duizhi).
