[Shennong Bencao Jing, Middle Grade]
When two hands are rubbed together, warmth emerges from within. This is a case where lasciviousness (Yin) serves as the cause and fire as the effect; such reasoning is indeed correct.
[Flavor and Property] Bitter, cold, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats scabies, itching, crusting, and malignant sores; kills lice; clears lingering heat in the interstices of bones and joints; brightens the eyes.
[Analysis] It states: Qinghao grows in the rivers and marshes of Mount Hua and is found everywhere. It sprouts earliest among plants, emerging as soon as spring is anticipated. The stem is plump like a finger, the leaves are extremely slender, and the color is uniformly verdant, resembling Yinchen Hao (Artemisia capillaris) but with a non-white underside. By summer, it gradually grows to about five or six chi tall. In late autumn, it blooms with small, pale yellow flowers, producing seeds like millet beneath the flowers. The stem is flexible and tough, while the root is white and hard. The seedling, leaf, flower, and fruit are all exceptionally fragrant, and their medicinal powers are similar. *Bitan* records: Among the genus Artemisia, there are naturally two types: one yellow and one green. The green variety enters medicine, referring to the Qinghao mentioned in the *Bencao Jing*, yet distinctions exist. Between Yinzhou and Suizhou in Shaanxi, amidst patches of Qinghao, one or two clumps are often seen that are distinctly greener than the rest, resembling pine or cypress, with an emerald-green beauty. When other artemisias turn yellow in autumn, this variety becomes even more emerald-green. The ancients considered the deep green variety superior, suspecting this to be the specific type that possesses the concentrated essence of the herb. Otherwise, why would not all artemisias be green, albeit with a paler hue? Lei Gong stated: When using Qinghao, only the middle section is ideal; parts reaching the knee should be discarded upwards, and parts reaching the waist downwards. Use the seed but not the leaf; use the root but not the stem. If all four parts are used together, it may instead induce chronic disease. For processing: for its leaves, or stems and fruits, soak them in the urine of seven seven-year-old boys for seven days and nights, then take out and dry for use.
[Commentary] It states: Qinghao is green and tall, slender, soft, neat, and dense, emerging as soon as spring is anticipated. It is a herb of the Shaoyang Gallbladder channel, serving as a dispersing agent that promotes the emergence of the new by clearing away the old. Its bitter flavor indicates it has emerged into Yang; its cold nature indicates it has not departed from Yin. Thus, it represents Yang within Yin and acts as the pivot of Yang. Generally, the Shaoyang Gallbladder governs the bones; therefore, it addresses lingering heat in the interstices of bones and joints. Similarly, scabies, itching, crusting, and malignant sores in the skin and interstices are also caused by lingering heat, which constitutes "old" pathogenic factors. Dispersing to remove the old allows the new to arrive. Regarding its ability to brighten the eyes: since the Liver and Gallbladder open into the eyes, this action not only clears away the old but also wipes away dust. When a gentleman looks upon the world, this is precisely what is meant.
