Categories of hatching from transformation, hatching from eggs, etc.
Ancient name: Sangdu Chong (Mulberry Borer Insect); also known as Sang Xie (Mulberry Scorpion). Actions: Dispersing and expelling wind.
Sweet in taste, warm in nature, toxic. (Li Shizhen said: The scorpion transforms into the long-horned beetle (Tian Niu) and is toxic; the grub (Qi Lao) transforms into the cicada and is non-toxic. This shows the difference in nature and taste between Qi Lao and the scorpion.)
Expels wind.
Treats leukoma (visual obstruction due to corneal opacity), blood stasis, and swelling. Pediatric convulsions (Jing Feng). Mouth sores and wind-type malnutrition (Feng Gan). Women's metrorrhagia and metrostaxis with red and white discharge. Post-abortion bleeding. Postpartum dysentery. Nowadays, people mostly use it to induce smallpox lesions. (Zhang Jingyue said: Sang Chong, also called Sang Can [Mulberry Silkworm], I do not know who originated its use for inducing smallpox. I have thoroughly examined Bencao materia medica and various texts on smallpox, but none record this. Upon examining its nature, it is merely an insect of yin-cold-damp toxicity. Precisely because it is toxic, it can induce smallpox; precisely because it is cold and damp, it can most severely damage the Spleen. Moreover, inducing smallpox should proceed from Qi and Blood, yet here poisonous drugs are used. What is the difference from pulling shoots to help them grow? Furthermore, this excessive toxin invades the Spleen; how can young and weak children endure it? I often see that those who take too much Sang Chong suffer from cracked lips and skin when the toxin erupts, and unceasing diarrhea when the Spleen fails. People only see death from smallpox but do not realize it is caused by insect toxin. The previous tragedy has occurred; the future can serve as a warning. Alas, how can one deal with the ignorant who remain asleep through the long night? I wish to shout at them, using this as a watchman's clapper, and condemn the abominable originator of this practice. Wu Yiluo notes: Sang Chong can expel wind and penetrate collaterals; its nature is roughly similar to Shan Jian Jia (Pangolin Scales), thus both can injure Yuan Qi (Original Qi) via toxin damage. Nowadays, no one treats smallpox without using it; the harm caused is countless. My fellow townsman Feng Chuzhan wrote "Jinnang Milu" (Secret Records from the Brocade Bag). The book is verbose, shallow, and vulgar, entirely unworthy of adoption. It states: Large Sang Chong possesses the efficacy of Ren Shen (Ginseng). Alas, this is the talk of infants. Who, lacking talent, dares to act ignorantly and falsely? Sang Chong is indeed Sang Du Chong. "Bie Lu", "Ri Hua Zi", "Shu Ben", "Cang Qi", and "Shi Zhen" all recorded it. Why did Zhang Jingyue claim it was not recorded? However, none stated it treats smallpox, nor was it ever used in smallpox texts.) Chong Shi (Insect Feces), functions are roughly the same. Both should be calcined until carbonized but retaining their original properties, ground into powder, and mixed with wine. (Note: Niu Xi [Bovine Lice] suck blood; by analogy with Meng Chong [Horseflies], they are even less suitable for smallpox patients. Yet the world habitually uses them, causing great harm to many people.)
