Indications. Applied externally to metal wounds (trauma caused by metal instruments), it stops bleeding and promotes tissue regeneration. For infants suffering from incessant night crying due to pathogenic heat in the Heart, grind two or three pieces of Jiedixin (Cyperus rotundus rhizome) with water, apply to the nipple, and let the infant suck. (Li Shizhen said: In the past, Lu Jia stated that the popping of lamp wick flowers heralds good fortune in all matters; the *Yiwen Zhi* (Bibliographic Treatise) of the *Book of Han* contains techniques for divining lamp wick flowers, indicating that lamp wick flowers are indeed spiritual objects. Qian Yi used them to treat night crying, likely drawing upon this auspicious meaning. A grandson of the Fushun Prince of the Ming imperial clan had a craving for the scent of lamp wick flowers; upon smelling it, he would cry and demand more. Li Shizhen diagnosed this as a pica disorder and cured him after one course of pills containing herbs for expelling parasites and treating pica.)
Moxibustion can treat a hundred diseases. When performing moxibustion for various wind-cold disorders, adding a small amount of powder from Shi Liuhuang (Stibnite) is even more effective. (For those performing moxibustion, it is advisable to use Yangsui (Fire Mirror), which captures the true fire of the sun by focusing sunlight; second best is using Huaimu (Locust wood) for friction fire; if these are urgently unavailable, real hemp oil lamps or candle flames may be used to ignite the moxa cone via a moxa stick. This method keeps the moxa sore moist until healing, preventing pain. Fires generated by striking metal and stone or drilling into wood should not be used. Shao Yong's *Huangji Jingshi* states: "Fire has no inherent form; it takes form through objects." This explains why metal and stone fires are fiercer than plant fires. Among wood fires, pine fire is difficult to heal from, cypress fire damages the spirit and causes excessive sweating, mulberry fire damages muscles, zhe wood fire causes hematemesis, orange wood fire damages Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) and meridians, elm fire damages bones and willpower, and bamboo fire damages tendons and eyesight. The *Book of Southern Qi* records that during the reign of Emperor Wu of Southern Qi, a monk brought a red fire from Northern Qi. This fire was redder but smaller than ordinary fire, claimed to cure illnesses, and was sought after by people of all statuses. Moxibustion with seven cones proved effective in most cases. Yang Daoqing from Wuxing, who suffered from deficiency diseases for twenty years, was cured immediately after moxibustion. It was widely called the "Holy Fire," and despite imperial edicts banning its use, it could not be stopped. It remains unknown what substance produced this fire.) Yangsui (Fire Mirror). (Li Shizhen said: It is a concave bronze mirror. When rubbed to generate heat and held towards the sun, it ignites moxa placed beneath it. The *Rites of Zhou* mentions Si Shi using Fusui to obtain bright fire from the sun, referring to this device.) Huozhu (Fire Pearl). (Li Shizhen said: The *Shuowen Jiezi* calls it Huoqi Zhu; the *Book of Han* refers to it as Meigui, pronounced Mei-Hui. The *Book of Tang* records: In the southeastern seas, there is a country called Lala, which produces Huoqi Zhu. The largest are egg-sized, resembling rock crystal, round and white, illuminating several feet. At noon, moxa placed beneath it catches fire. Used for moxibustion, its nature is gentle and non-damaging. It is currently found in Champa, known as Zhaoxia Dahuo Zhu.)
