(Tobacco) has the functions of disseminating Yang Qi, dispelling foulness, and killing parasites.
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature. It disseminates Yang Qi and promotes circulation through the meridians. It is used to treat mountainous miasma (miasma prevalent in mountainous regions). (During the Ming Dynasty campaign in Yunnan, troops entered deep into miasmic areas where all soldiers fell ill, except for one camp that avoided infection by using tobacco. Consequently, its fame spread far and wide, and people began to use it.) It repels cold-damp Yin pathogens, dispels foulness, and kills parasites. (Crushed juice can poison head lice; water from tobacco pipes can detoxify snake venom.) Its aroma enters the mouth and circulates throughout the body within moments, making the whole body feel refreshed. (Its nature is purely Yang, capable of moving and dispersing.) It is used as a substitute for wine or tea, never tiring even after lifelong use. (Hence, it is also known as "Xiangsi Cao" [Love-Grass].) However, the fire qi scorches the lungs. (It easily consumes Lung Yin. Nowadays, many suffer from throat wind, sore throat, coughing with blood, and loss of voice, which may not be unrelated to the habit of smoking tobacco.) It depletes blood and shortens lifespan; those who value health should stay away from it. Tobacco produced in Fujian is the best. (Fine texture, named "Jinsi" [Golden Thread]. Shen's *Lushu* records: There is a herb in Luzon called "Tabaco," brought back by people from Zhangzhou from overseas, and planted in Putian. Now it is found everywhere, not just in Fujian.)
Vining Herb Category (Polygonum multiflorum / He Shou Wu).
It tonifies the Liver and Kidney, harmonizes Qi and Blood, astringes Essence and Qi, and transforms deficiency-phlegm.
Bitter in flavor, it strengthens the Kidney. Warm in nature, it tonifies the Liver. Sweet in flavor, it benefits Yin. The astringent property consolidates Essence and Qi, strengthens sinews, nourishes marrow, nourishes Blood, and expels Wind. (To treat Wind disorders, first treat the Blood; when Blood moves, Wind extinguishes itself.) It darkens hair and beard. (Hence the name "Shou Wu" [First Hair].) It enhances sexual potency and aids fertility. It is an excellent tonic. (Tonifying Yin without causing stagnation or coldness, strengthening Yang without causing dryness or heat, it possesses a neutral-natured quality and obtains the pure Qi of Heaven and Earth, thus serving as a sacred medicine for regulating and tonifying chronic illnesses.) When Qi and Blood are in great harmony, conditions such as emaciation due to overwork, wind-deficiency sores and hemorrhoids, scrofula, and carbuncles will heal. (When Ying-Blood is harmonized, carbuncles subside; red ones are called "Chuang Shu" [Sore Broom] in surgery.) Chronic diseases in the abdomen will be resolved. (Because it can transform deficiency-phlegm.) Conditions like stagnant evil blood and sallow complexion will naturally recover. It treats chronic dysentery and malignant malaria. (Benefiting Yin and tonifying the Liver, it is a key herb for treating malaria.) It regulates pregnancy, childbirth, metrorrhagia, and leukorrhea. It stops bleeding from traumatic injuries. (Applied externally at the end of Deng Bifeng's *Weisheng Zadian Fang*, the effect is miraculous.) Harvest large roots that have aged for many years and refine them carefully. Long-term use prolongs life and prevents aging. There are two types: red and white. At night, the vines intertwine. (Hence another name "Jiaoteng" [Intertwined Vine], resembling the union of Yin and Yang.) Choose roots about the size of a fist, with five lobes, tender and moist as superior quality. Old, hard, and fibrous roots should not be used. Three-hundred-year-old roots can be as large as a basket; consuming them makes one an earthly immortal. For preparation, use equal parts of red and white varieties. Soak in rice-washing water. Scrape the skin with a bamboo knife. Slice the pieces. Mix evenly with large black soybeans. Place in a willow steamer and clay pot. Steam nine times and sun-dry nine times. Use Poria (Fuling) as a guiding drug. Avoid all meats, scaleless fish, green onions, garlic, radish (Laifu), and ironware. (Consuming radish causes premature graying of hair and beard; contact with iron damages the human body.)
