Nourishes Kidney Water (Yin fluid of the Kidney) and moistens the Triple Burner (San Jiao).
Salty and neutral in nature. Nourishes Kidney Water, moistens the Triple Burner, nourishes the Dantian (Lower Elixir Field), calms the Five Zang Organs, reduces bone-steaming fever, softens hard masses, treats consumptive cough, white turbidity (leukorrhea or cloudy urine), and spermatorrhea.
It is a herb that nourishes Yin and descends Fire. If decocted and refined improperly, or taken excessively and erroneously, it may instead cause dryness and thirst. (Salty flavor enters the Blood aspect; moreover, after refining, it contains warm Qi within, which causes deficient Yang to move recklessly, thereby further depleting True Water.) In autumn, collect urine from young boys. For each vat, use seven qian of Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) and mulberry branches to stir and clarify. Pour off the clear liquid. Repeat this three times. Then add dew collected in autumn to stir and clarify again. (Hence it is called "Autumn Stone," processed through such steps multiple times.) The impurities are purified, and the salty taste is reduced. Spread heavy paper on ash and dry it in the sun. Scrape away the heavy, turbid sediment at the bottom, taking only the light and clear portion as Autumn Stone. Physicians of later generations do not collect it in autumn but indiscriminately gather human urine, clarifying and drying it with soap pod water for "Yin Refining," or using fire for "Yang Refining." This completely deviates from the proper method; how can it treat diseases? Moreover, after fire refining, its nature becomes warm. (For edema/swelling, salt is contraindicated; it is excellent to mix Autumn Stone into food. Further grind Autumn Stone, place it in a jar, cover with an iron lid, seal with salt mud, and distill/sublimate. The substance rising to the top of the lid is called "Autumn Ice," which is light in taste and fragrant, being the essence of Autumn Stone.)
Tonifies deficiency and moistens dryness.
Sweet and salty. (Li Shizhen said: Human milk has no fixed nature. If the mother is peaceful and her diet is bland, her milk will be neutral. If she is irritable, drinks alcohol, eats pungent foods, or suffers from heat disorders, her milk will be hot. Also, milk during pregnancy is called "Taboo Milk," which is highly toxic. If infants consume it, they suffer vomiting and diarrhea, developing malnutrition and wasting diseases; it also harms the fetus internally and must be prohibited.) Moistens the Five Zang Organs, supplements blood, stops thirst (Xiao Ke), lubricates the skin, clears irritability and heat, regulates dysphagia (Ye Ge), beautifies the complexion, and promotes bowel movement. (Especially suitable for the elderly with blood depletion and constipation.) Ophthalmology uses it to drop for redness, astringency, and excessive tearing. (For heat patterns, soak Coptis Rhizoma (Huanglian) and apply. Since it is transformed from blood, the eyes gain vision when nourished by blood.) Contraindicated for deficiency-cold with slippery discharge and for those with weak stomachs. If milk is consumed together with food, it leads to stagnation and diarrhea. (Li Shizhen said: Milk is transformed from blood, generated by the Spleen and Stomach, and regulated by the Chong and Ren vessels. Before pregnancy, it remains to nourish the fetus; after childbirth, it changes from red to white and rises as breast milk. This is a profound mystery of creation and a medicine to cure disease and prolong life. Wu Yiluo notes: Milk is purely Yin in nature; it can slip the intestines, clog the diaphragm, and dampen the Spleen. It is suitable only for those with excess Yang and deficient Yin without stagnation. If there is Yang deficiency or stagnation, it is not appropriate. Zhu Danxi said: Human milk contains the toxicity of the five flavors and the fire of the seven emotions; it is safer to drink cow's milk.) Choose the first-born, thick milk as best. Do not use if it is yellow, reddish, thin, or has a fishy/foul odor. Alternatively, sun-dry and collect with Poria (Fuling) powder, or steam to obtain powder, which is even better. (Avoids the risks of slipping intestines, dampening Spleen, and clogging diaphragm.) Method for obtaining milk powder by steaming: Boil water in a small pot. Use a silver ladle about the size of a bowl (a tin ladle is also acceptable). Pour a small amount of milk into the ladle. Float it on the boiling water to steam. Then float it on cold water to dry immediately. Scrape off the powder. Steam and scrape repeatedly, similar to making rice noodle sheets. (Must be used fresh; over time it becomes oily and rancid. It is best to use milk from one woman; mixed milk results in mixed Qi. Mix equal parts of milk powder and Ginseng powder, form pills with honey, named Shen Ru Wan (Ginseng-Milk Pill), which greatly tonifies Qi and Blood. If a cow eats snakes, its hair grows backward, and eating its meat kills humans; drinking one sheng of human milk cures this immediately. If insects enter the ear, dripping human milk makes them exit immediately.)
