Commonly known as Huajiao (Zanthoxylum bungeanum). It can disseminate cold, dry dampness, and warm the middle jiao.
Pungent, bitter, and warm in nature. Toxic. Warms the middle jiao and disperses cold. Dries dampness and eliminates wind. Directs qi downward and kills parasites. Treats rebellious qi above. Cough, vomiting, hernia, and mass accumulation. Wind-damp-cold bi syndrome.
Benefits the five zang organs. Removes old blood. Treats chronic dysentery. Amenorrhea. Cold pain in the abdomen. Various residual conditions after childbirth. Dysentery with lochia stasis. Abdominal pain. Contraindications and processing methods are the same as Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper).
Compared to Chuanjiao, its flavor is shorter-lasting, and its texture lines are lower/less prominent. It is incompatible with Ku Lou (Trichosanthes kirilowii root) and Fang Kui (Adenophora stricta root). It fears Xionghuang (Realgar). (Swelling of the palms and soles, caused by wind; mix Huajiao powder and salt in equal parts, blend with vinegar, and apply externally.)
Dries dampness, opens the chest and diaphragm, and resolves phlegm.
Pungent and extremely hot in nature. Toxic. Warms the middle jiao and directs qi downward. Opens the chest and diaphragm, resolves phlegm. Treats cold-phlegm and food stagnation. Slippery cold dysentery. Yin-toxin abdominal pain. Vomiting clear water due to stomach cold.
Floating heat causing toothache. (Can be combined with Bibo (Long pepper) and prepared as a powder.) Kills all toxins from fish, meat, turtles, and mushrooms. (From Liu Bowen's "Duoneng Bishi": For centipede bites, chew Huajiao and apply to the wound; pain will cease immediately.) Many people indulge in it because it opens the chest and diaphragm. However, it damages lung qi, depletes vital energy, stirs fire and moves blood, damages teeth, blurs vision, and induces sores, hemorrhoids, and internal toxins. It should only be used when yin qi is sufficiently abundant. Bicheckie (Long Pepper), which is simply larger Huajiao, belongs to the same category but different species. Their therapeutic effects are roughly similar. It also easily causes qi to rebel upward.
Disseminates wind-cold, dries dampness, soothes the liver, and directs qi downward.
Pungent, bitter, and extremely hot in nature. Slightly toxic. Soothes the liver and dries the spleen. Warms the middle jiao and directs qi downward. Eliminates dampness and relieves depression. Resolves phlegm and kills parasites. Opens the couli (pores). Drives out wind-cold. Treats Jueyin headache. Yin-toxin abdominal pain. (Pain located in the lower abdomen.) Vomiting and acid regurgitation. (Colloquially called "vinegar heart"; some vomit acid. One should reduce fire and resolve phlegm, using Wuzhuyu as a guiding herb. Cai Zhongcheng suffered from bitter phlegm-fluid retention, attacking once every ten days, with headache, cold back, acid vomiting, and inability to eat. He obtained a prescription named Wuxian Dan: Wuzhuyu soaked seven times in decoction, mixed in equal parts with Fuling, formed into honey pills, taken until cured.) Fullness and obstruction in the chest/diaphragm. Food stagnation and dysentery. Blood bi and yin hernia. Ben tun (rushing pig) syndrome and masses. Hemorrhoids and intestinal wind. Hongxiangjiao (Tinea pedis) with edema. Mouth and tongue ulcers. (Grind into powder, mix with vinegar, apply to the sole of the foot; heals overnight, as it guides heat downward.) Disease of the Chong vessel, with rebellious qi and interior urgency. (This herb should be the primary treatment.) Although its nature is hot, it can guide heat downward. (Duan Chengshi's "Youyang Zazu" states that Jiao nature favors descending, while Wuzhuyu nature favors ascending, which seems not entirely accurate. Li Shizhen said: This herb directs qi downward very quickly. Li Dongyuan said: When turbid yin does not descend and jue qi rebels upward, causing diaphragmatic blockage and fullness, only Wuzhuyu can treat it.) Benefits obstructed qi in the large intestine. Expels residual blood after childbirth. Depletes qi and stirs fire. Blurs vision and induces sores. Do not use if the disease is not due to cold-stagnation with dampness. Even if there is cold-dampness, use cautiously in small doses. Opened, aged ones are superior. Rinse with boiling water to remove bitter and acrid juices. To stop vomiting, stir-fry with Huanglian (Coptis) decoction. To treat hernia, stir-fry with salt water. To treat blood disorders, stir-fry with vinegar. Incompatible with Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) and Xiaoshi (Niter). Fears Zhi Yingshi (Fluorite).
