Lightly dispersing and ascending yang to dissipate blood stasis.
Bitter and neutral in nature. Its color is green. Its shape faces upward. Its interior is hollow. Its imagery corresponds to Zhen (Thunder) (Zhen represents an open vessel facing up). It absorbs the qi of Shaoyang Gallbladder. When cooked with rice to make pills, it assists the Spleen and Stomach, thereby promoting the rising and generating of Yang Qi. (Jiegu's Zhizhu Wan uses lotus leaves cooked with rice as a binder for pills.) For cases of inverted smallpox lesions, this herb is used to promote eruption. (Equal parts of Bombyx Batryticatus powder are taken down with Coriander Decoction.) It can dissipate blood stasis while preserving healthy blood. It treats hematemesis, epistaxis, metrorrhagia, and bloody leukorrhea. It addresses trauma-induced blood stasis and postpartum blood stasis, as well as all types of bleeding disorders. External washing with it treats scrotal wind dermatitis. (Zheng Dianyī stated: Lotus leaf powder taken orally with wine, three qian, is highly effective for seminal emission. Dongyuan stated: For Thunderhead Wind syndrome, characterized by nodular swelling and pain on the head and face, aversion to cold with high fever, resembling Taiyang disease, affecting the Three Yang meridians, one should not overuse heavy cold medicines to attack what is not at fault. The prescription Qingzhen Tang is used, consisting of one lotus leaf, five qian of Cimicifugae Rhizoma, and five qian of Atractylodis Rhizoma, decocted.) Due to its ascending and dispersing nature which consumes Qi, it is contraindicated for those with deficiency.
Ancient name: Jishi; common name: Jiaojiao. Clears summerheat.
Sweet and cold in nature. Calms the middle and clears summerheat. Relieves thirst and resolves alcohol intoxication. Excessive consumption damages the Zang-Fu organs and depletes Yang Qi. (If abdominal distension occurs from overconsumption, warm ginger wine can be taken to resolve it.) There are distinctions between two-horned, three-horned, and four-horned varieties. (Wang Anpin's Wuling Records states that three- or four-horned ones are called Ji, while two-horned ones are called Jiaojiao. The flowers turn following the moon, similar to sunflowers turning toward the sun.)
Also known as Jitou. Tonifies the Spleen and astringes essence.
Sweet, neutral, and astringent. Tonifies the Spleen and secures the Kidney. Assists Qi and astringes essence. Treats nocturnal emission and spermatorrhea. Resolves summerheat, heat, and alcohol toxicity. Treats vaginal discharge, diarrhea, and urinary incontinence. Those with difficulty in urination or defecation should not take it. Children should not consume it in large amounts as it is very difficult to digest. Steamed and pounded into powder, it serves as an astringent for essence. It can also be used with the shell.
Also known as Wuyu and Dili. Purges heat and aids digestion.
Sweet, cold, and slippery. Promotes digestion and attacks accumulation. Removes solid heat in the chest. Treats the five types of dysphagia and food stagnation in the esophagus (Qi dysphagia, Food dysphagia, Labor dysphagia, Worry dysphagia, Thought dysphagia; Esophageal obstruction also has five types: Worry obstruction, Anger obstruction, Qi obstruction, Heat obstruction, Cold obstruction). Treats polydipsia, jaundice, blood disorders, and gu poison. (Powder taken internally wards off gu poison.) It can dissolve copper. (Wang Ji stated: Eating it with copper coins causes the coins to dissolve, showing it is a substance that dissolves hardness and reduces accumulation, thus opening the five obstructions and digesting retained food. Those who accidentally swallow copper should not eat it together with people having cold qi, as it leads to abdominal distension and fullness. Children eating too much may experience knotting pain below the umbilicus. Pregnant women especially must avoid it. (For children's mouth ulcers, the umbilical cord burned to retain its properties, ground into powder, is applied externally.))
