[Shan Yao (Dioscorea Opposita)] Sweet in taste, also known as Shu Yu. It clears heat and unblocks yang.
Sweet and bitter, cool and slippery in nature, slightly toxic. It benefits the five zang organs, unblocks the heart and diaphragm, resolves wind-heat toxicity, and treats epidemic high fever. (All are taken as fresh juice.) It stops dysentery caused by heat-toxin. (In summer, it is cooked with vegetables into porridge.) It is also mashed and applied externally to treat bites or wounds from birds and beasts. Yuxi stated that consuming it moves qi; those with cold constitution who eat it will inevitably suffer from abdominal pain and diarrhea. Its tubers, soaked in vinegar, can be rubbed on the face to remove cosmetic powder residue, leaving the skin moist and radiant.
[Huang Hua Cai (Hemerocallis Citrina)] Also known as Huang Hua Cai. It unblocks stagnation and promotes intestinal function.
Sweet, slightly bitter and slightly cold. It unblocks stagnant qi and benefits the stomach and intestines.
[Ji (Houttuynia Cordata)] Ancient name: Ji. It clears heat and resolves toxicity.
Pungent, slightly cold, slightly toxic. It dissipates heat-toxin and abscesses, treats sores, hemorrhoids, rectal prolapse, interrupts malaria, resolves various toxins, and is applied externally to malignant sores and tinea capitis. (It is roasted inside a light bamboo tube and then mashed.)
[Ge Gen (Pueraria Lobata)] It clears heat and promotes urination.
Sweet, cold, and slippery. It removes sudden heat and promotes the water passages. (Li Shizhen said: Its nature is cold and slippery, it drains yang qi, descends rather than ascends, and depletes the body's true yuan.) As a vegetable, it is sweet and slippery, and can also be eaten with vinegar. (The tender stems are harvested, boiled in ash water to remove slime, and dried.) The extracted starch is very smooth and delicious. (The root is purple, with white powder on the skin and flesh; it is mashed, washed repeatedly to clarify, and the starch is collected.)
[Yu Tou (Colocasia Esculenta)] It relaxes the stomach and unblocks the intestines.
Pungent, neutral, and slippery, slightly toxic. (It should be boiled with ginger, the water changed, and boiled again before consumption.) It opens the appetite and unblocks intestinal obstruction. Boiled with fish, it strongly directs qi downward and harmonizes the middle jiao. The stem rubbed on bee stings is effective.
[Tian Nan Xing (Arisaema Erubescens)] When cooked, it thickens the stomach and intestines; when raw, it resolves drug toxicity.
Sweet, pungent, and cold, slightly toxic. Cooked and eaten, it thickens the stomach and intestines. Taken orally as a raw powder, it resolves various drug toxicities. (Stop when foul matter is vomited.) Commonly known as Xiang Yu.
[Shan Yao (Dioscorea Opposita)] Also known as Shu Yu. It tonifies the spleen and lungs, and astringes essence and qi.
White color enters the lung; sweet taste returns to the spleen. It tonifies deficiencies, clears deficiency heat, moistens skin and hair, and transforms phlegm and saliva. (Stir-fried with ginger juice.) It consolidates the stomach and intestines and stops diarrhea and dysentery. Since the lung is the mother of the kidney, it also benefits the kidney and strengthens yin, treating deficiency and consumptive diseases. Since the spleen is the child of the heart, it also benefits heart qi. (The child can make the mother full.) It treats forgetfulness and seminal emission due to its astringent nature. Raw mashed application treats carbuncles and sores, reducing swelling and hard toxicity. Those that are white and firm are superior. (Round ones are called Xi Shan Yao; flat ones are called Huai Shan Yao, both suitable for medicinal use, cultivated varieties are common, but wild ones are even better.) Do not consume together with wheat flour products. Ling Yu Zi (Tubercles formed on the vine). Sweet and warm. Its efficacy is stronger than Shan Yao. It benefits the kidney, strengthens the waist and legs, tonifies deficiency, and prevents hunger after eating. (For frequent urination, boil Shan Yao in alum water, mix with equal parts of Bai Fu Ling powder, and take two qian with rice water.)
