(Adzuki bean) has the effects of stopping diarrhea, promoting diuresis, and detoxification.
Sweet and astringent, neutral in nature. It dissipates blood stasis, reduces swelling, clears heat, and detoxifies. It treats polydipsia (Xiao Ke), vomiting, and regurgitation; dysentery with diarrhea and frequent urination; and resolves the toxicity of *Rumex japonicus* (Shu Mang). (Note: Zhou Xianwang's *Xiuzhen Fang* records that those poisoned by *Rumex japonicus* can be cured by drinking decoction made from boiled adzuki beans. To test this, one may first cut the seedlings of *Rumex japonicus*, pour the bean juice on them, and the roots will rot and fail to grow, demonstrating its dissolving and reducing properties. Furthermore, when cooked with rice, the rice grains become soft and small, further revealing its nature of overcoming and reducing. Li Shizhen relayed Lu Lianfu's view that adzuki beans tonify the Kidney because their shape is slightly curved like a kidney. However, objects resembling a kidney merely enter the Kidney meridian, just as Forsythia resembles the heart and enters the Heart meridian, or Lychee seeds resemble testes and enter the Kidney meridian; they do not actually tonify the Heart or Kidney.)
It tonifies the Spleen, removes dampness, and dispels summerheat.
Sweet, neutral in nature, fishy and fragrant in odor, slightly yellow in color. (It is the grain corresponding to the Spleen.) It harmonizes the Spleen and Stomach, descends turbidity, and ascends clarity. It dispels summerheat and removes dampness. (It can eliminate summerheat in the Spleen and Stomach.) It stops thirst and diarrhea. It specifically treats diseases of the Middle Jiao (Spleen/Stomach). (When Spleen Qi is strong, dampness is eliminated, and righteous Qi naturally flourishes; thus, it can treat vomiting, cholera-like disorders, and various leukorrhea syndromes. For red and white leukorrhea, roast and powder the beans, take 2 qian with rice water; for cholera with muscle cramps, powder the beans, mix with vinegar water, and take orally; both are excellent.) Its nature is balanced and mild, so there are no contraindications. However, excessive consumption can obstruct Qi flow. It should not be taken when pathogenic factors of Cold Damage are vigorous. Use raw or roasted and powdered.
(Astringent, dispels wind.)
Sweet, bitter, astringent, warm in nature. Treats rogue wind and wind-bi syndrome. The taste is inferior. It has little efficacy. It can only be used as horse feed. Hence, it is commonly called "Horse Feed Bean."
(Descends Qi and returns to the origin.)
Sweet, warm in nature. Warms the middle and descends rebellious Qi, benefits the intestines and stomach, tonifies the Kidney, and returns to the origin. Stops hiccups. (Li Shizhen said: *Douzi* was not recorded in the ancient Materia Medica, but only in recent minor texts that it is warm and tonifies Yuan Yang. A patient suffered from incessant hiccups after illness, audible to neighbors. Someone advised burning Douzi seeds until carbonized, mixing with plain water, and taking 2 qian, which stopped immediately. This also utilizes its ability to descend Qi and return to the origin, causing the rebellion to cease.)
