Moisten the lungs and relieve summerheat.
Sweet and neutral. Stops thirst (Xiao Ke, wasting-thirst syndrome). Suitable for decocting with lung-moistening herbs. Wine brewed with autumn dew is the clearest. Dew from a hundred flowers improves complexion. (Frost kills things, while dew nourishes them; their natures differ according to the season. Dew can relieve summerheat, therefore when White Dew arrives, End of Heat has passed. Malaria must arise from summerheat, therefore malaria remedies should be taken after being soaked in dew overnight.)
Clear heat.
Sweet and cold. Relieves alcohol-heat. Treats nasal congestion due to Cold Damage (Shang Han). For various heats and facial redness after drinking alcohol. Mix with clam powder. Apply to prickly heat sores in summer months and red swelling under the armpits. Recovery is immediate.
(Shizhen said: When Yin is excessive, dew condenses into frost. The *Qian Xiang Zhan* states: Heaven's Qi descends to become dew, and gentle winds blow it to form frost.) To collect frost, sweep it into a bottle with a chicken feather. Seal tightly and store in a shady place. It will not spoil even after a long time.
Stop pestilence and clear heat.
Sweet and cold. Treats epidemic febrile diseases (Shi Xing Wen Yi) during seasonal transitions. Suitable for decocting with herbs for clearing fire in Cold Damage. Effective for smearing on prickly heat. Winter snow sealed tightly and stored in a shady place does not spoil even after decades. (The third Wu day after Winter Solstice is La; La snow is highly suitable for vegetables and wheat. It also kills insects and locusts. Soaking grains in water before planting makes them drought-resistant and insect-free. Sprinkling it on tables and mats drives away flies. Preserving all fruits and foods in it prevents worm damage. Is this not proof of its ability to eliminate insects and locusts? Spring snow contains insects, and the water spoils easily, hence it is not used.)
Clear heat.
Sweet and cold. The essence of Taiyin (Taiyin Jing, the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian). Water at its extreme resembles Earth. It changes from soft to hard. This is what is meant by "when things reach an extreme, they undergo contrary transformation." In Yang toxicity from Cold Damage, where heat is severe and causes coma, placing a piece on Danzhong (CV17, located between the two nipples) is effective. (Relieves liquor toxicity.) (Cangqi said: Eating ice in midsummer goes against the climate. The clash of cold and heat leads to various diseases. The *Food Recipe* states: In summer, ice should only be used to cool food and drink, making them refreshing, but should not be eaten. Although it brings temporary relief, it eventually causes disease. Emperor Huizong of Song ate too much ice, developed spleen disease, and imperial physicians were ineffective. He summoned Yang Jie, who presented Dali Zhong Wan (Great Earth Center Pill). The Emperor said: I have taken it many times. Jie replied: The illness is caused by eating ice. I request to decoct this medicine using ice, thus treating the root cause of the disease. Indeed, he recovered. Such a person can be called a practitioner of flexible methods.)
