(Pingqi) purges the Liver, breaks Qi stagnation, and dissipates accumulations.
It is acrid, bitter, and warm in nature. Its color is green, and its aroma is potent. It enters the Qi aspect of the Liver and Gallbladder meridians. It soothes the Liver and purges the Lung. (Any herb that purges Qi also purges the Lung.) It guides other herbs to the Jueyin division.
(Chaihu soothes the Liver Qi in the Upper Jiao, while Pingqi calms the Liver Qi in the Lower Jiao.) It directs downward food stagnation, entering the Taiyin Spleen's granary. It breaks stagnation, reduces hardness, eliminates phlegm, and dissipates masses. It treats Liver Qi depression and accumulation, hypochondriac pain, irritability, and chronic malaria with formed masses (because it enters the Liver to scatter pathogens and the Spleen to remove phlegm, Qingpi Yin uses it as the sovereign herb). It treats rebellious Qi in the chest and diaphragm, hernia pain, and breast swelling. (Zhu Danxi said: The breasts belong to the Yangming meridian, and the nipples belong to the Jueyin meridian. If a nursing mother suffers from anger or depression, compounded by the accumulation of rich and heavy foods, the Qi of the Jueyin meridian fails to circulate, so the orifices cannot open; the blood of the Yangming meridian boils upward, causing extreme heat and suppuration. Or, if the infant has stagnant phlegm and heat in the diaphragm, sleeping while sucking on the nipple causes exhaled Qi to generate nodules. In the early stage, one must endure the pain, massage until soft, and suck to ensure milk flow, which will naturally dissipate. The treatment method should primarily use Pingqi to soothe Liver Qi stagnation, supplemented by Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) to clear Stomach heat, Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus) to reduce swelling, Gancao Jie (Radix Glycyrrhizae with knot) to detoxify, and others such as Moyao (Myrrha), Ju Ye (Citrus Reticulatae Folium), Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Pugongying (Taraxaci Herba), Zaojiaoci (Gleditsiae Spina), and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) can be used as appropriate, with a little wine added as an adjuvant. If it becomes sunken after a long time, it is called Ru Yan (breast cancer) and is incurable.) It is most capable of inducing sweating. (The peel can reach the skin, and acridity is good at dispersing.) It is contraindicated for those with Qi deficiency and spontaneous sweating. (Its nature is quite fierce and sharp, like a young person in their prime who is inevitably restless and violent; when it matures into orange peel, it is like a person reaching old age, where the fierce nature gradually decreases; after aging for a long time into Chenpi (aged tangerine peel), having experienced many colds and summers, the dryness and agitation are completely eliminated.) It is the green peel of the citrus fruit before it turns yellow. (Ancient prescriptions did not use it; after the Song Dynasty, it began to be used separately from Chenpi.) Remove the pith and slice. Stir-fry with vinegar mixed. (Chenpi ascends and floats, entering the Spleen and Lung meridians to treat upper conditions; Pingqi descends and sinks, entering the Liver and Gallbladder meridians to treat lower conditions. Stir-frying with vinegar follows the principle: "The Liver desires dispersion; eat acrid quickly to disperse it, use sour to drain it, and use bitter to descend it.") The leaves treat breast carbuncle, hypochondriac carbuncle, and lung carbuncle. (All can enter the Jueyin meridian, move Liver Qi, reduce swelling, and dissipate toxicity; squeeze for juice and drink.) The flesh generates phlegm and gathers Qi. (Li Shizhen said: The orange peel descends Qi and eliminates phlegm, whereas its flesh generates phlegm and gathers fluids; thus, the effects of the exterior and interior are different.) The seeds treat hernia pain and cold pain in the waist and kidneys. Remove the peel and stir-fry.
