Guishibu (Drynariae Rhizoma): Also known as Houjiang. It strengthens the Kidney, promotes blood circulation, and treats fractures and injuries.
Bitter in flavor, it solidifies the Kidney; thus, it treats tinnitus, chronic diarrhea due to Kidney deficiency, and toothache. (For the above three conditions, grind the herb into powder, insert it into a pig kidney, stew until cooked, and eat on an empty stomach; or stir-fry until blackened, grind into powder, apply to teeth, and swallow, which is also effective.) Warm in nature, it promotes blood circulation. (It can also stop bleeding.) It tonifies fractures and injuries. (Named after its efficacy: mix with porridge and apply the powder to the injured area.) It treats bone atrophy. (Dai Yuanli frequently used this herb with good results.) *Bencao Jing Shu* states: Do not use together with wind-drying herbs. The rhizome resembles ginger but is flat and long. Scrape off the yellow-red hairs with a copper knife. Slice thinly. Mix with honey, steam, and sun-dry. (For hair loss after illness, decoct branches of Rosa multiflora var. spontanea [Yeqiangwei] and brush the juice on the scalp.)
Shiwei (Pyrrosiae Folium): Promotes urination.
Bitter and sweet, slightly cold in nature. Clears Lung Metal to nourish the source of transformation. (All diuretic herbs must first clear Lung fire.) Opens the Bladder and benefits the water passages. Treats metrorrhagia, strangury, and carbuncles on the back. (Stir-fry into powder, mix with cold wine, and take orally.) *Bielu* claims it tonifies the Five Zang organs and benefits essence and Qi, but this is merely the result of clearing heat and draining dampness, not true tonification. Do not use if there is no damp-heat. Grows in shady places on rocks, soft and tough like leather. When using, wipe off the yellow hairs on the back, and lightly roast. Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Talcum (Huashi), and Belamcandae Rhizoma (Shegan) act as guides. Works well with Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu). Those growing on ancient roof tiles are named Wayei and are also excellent for treating strangury.
Jinxingcao (Pteridis Multifidae Rhizoma et Radix): Also known as Fengweicao and Qixingcao. Drains heat and resolves toxicity.
Bitter and cold in nature. Resolves toxicity and reduces swelling. Specifically manages malignant sores in surgery. For early-stage Yang-toxicity that has not ulcerated, scrofula along the neck, and carbuncles on the back. It can be chopped and decocted in wine, or ground into powder and taken with wine, or decocted for washing, or pounded and applied externally. All methods show miraculous effects. It also resolves Dan-Shi toxicity. If it is not Yang-toxicity or mineral-induced toxicity, it should not be taken. (Su Song said: The nature is extremely cold; taking it causes diarrhea, requiring supplementation to restore balance. Elderly people should not take it. Zong Shi said: For Dan-Shi toxicity manifesting on the back and all kinds of abscesses, take 2.5 qian of roots and leaves, decoct with one zhan of wine, and drink. Black fluid will be discharged, resolving the toxicity of ingested minerals and healing the sore. If unable to drink wine, grind into powder and take with fresh well-water, stopping when effective. Li Shizhen said: This herb generally treats mineral-induced toxicity. If the toxicity arises from depression and stagnation of Qi and Blood, it is not suitable.) Pound the root. Apply real sesame oil to the head to promote abundant hair growth.
