To promote circulation and open the orifices.
Pungent, warm, aromatic, and penetrating. It opens the meridians, unblocks all orifices, and penetrates the muscle layers and bones. It treats sudden stroke (Zhong Feng), as well as disorders of Qi, blood, and various pains, phlegm-jue, and convulsions/epilepsy. (Yan Yonghe's *Jisheng Fang* states: For patients with stroke who are unconscious, pour a mixture of Moschus (Shexiang) and clear oil into their mouth to first open the blocked orifices; Tang Dezong's Zhengyuan era *Guangli Fang* states: For those suffering from evil qi invasion or hostile influences near death, use 1 qian of Moschus (Shexiang), mixed with vinegar, and pour it in.) It treats masses and accumulations (Zheng Jia), miasma malaria, nasal congestion, deafness, eye nebulae, and cold sensations in the yin regions. It repels evil spirits, detoxifies, kills parasites, and induces abortion. It also resolves accumulations caused by spoiled fruit and wine, treating fruit accumulation and wine accumulation. (Li Dongyuan said: Moschus (Shexiang) enters the Spleen to treat flesh diseases; Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) enters the Liver to treat tendon diseases; Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) enters the Kidney to treat bone diseases.) Its nature is roaming, penetrating, and soaring; internally it penetrates to the bone marrow, and externally it reaches the skin and hair. Li Dongyuan stated that it searches out wind from the bone marrow. If the wind pathogen is only in the muscles, misusing it will instead draw the wind into the bones. Zhu Danxi stated that for wind affecting the five Zang organs, Moschus (Shexiang) should be avoided because it drains Wei Qi. Therefore, for conditions characterized by deficiency, it should not be used. If absolutely necessary, it should be used in small doses. People with chronic deficiency consumptive diseases and pregnant women should not wear it. It should be ground into powder for use. When using it, the "Dangmenzi" (the best part of the musk pod) is especially excellent. Garlic is contraindicated. Do not let it approach the nose to prevent insects from entering the brain. (When hunted, the musk deer self-removes the glandular sac where the scent accumulates, causing surrounding vegetation to turn yellow; merchants sometimes adulterate it with lychee seeds.)
Sweet, sour, warm. Treats regurgitation and vomiting. (Burned to ash, mixed with a small amount of Cinnabar (Zhusha) powder, placed under the tongue; very effective.) Urine. (Rub teeth and nose with ginger or garlic, or insert raw green onion into the nostrils, and urine will be released.) Treats earwigs and other insects entering the ears; dripping the solution causes them to exit. Meat treats chronic wasting diseases (Lao Zhu), scrofula (Shu Lou), and gu poison. Saliva treats scrofula (Luo Li). (Puncture and apply topically.)
Ancient name: Huan, pronounced "Duan".
Sweet, sour, neutral. Promotes muscle growth. (Lean people boil and eat it with five flavors; Zong Shi said: Among wild beasts, only Huan meat is the most delicious and beneficial for lean individuals.) Treats deficiency and exhaustion of upper Qi, coughing, reverse flow of Qi, and consumption fever. (Boil and eat with five flavors.) Treats edema (Shui Zhang) that has persisted without cure. (For those near death, make into a soup and eat; it greatly promotes urination; *Shenghui Fang* uses polished rice cooked hot.) Treats dysentery with red and white discharge that has persisted without cure. (Boil the meat, leave exposed overnight, and eat empty-stomached with sauce; one meal brings recovery.)
