Tonifies the Middle Jiao.
Sweet and warm. Benefits Qi and tonifies the Middle Jiao (Sū Sòng stated: The sticky variety is Shu [glutinous millet], which can be used to brew wine; northerners call it Huangmi [yellow millet], also known as Huangnuo; the non-sticky variety is Shu [broomcorn millet], which is edible, just as rice has Jing [non-glutinous] and Nuo [glutinous] varieties. Lǐ Shízhēn stated: This is an error confusing Ji [millet] with Shu [broomcorn millet], and Shu [glutinous millet] with Shu [broomcorn millet]. Actually, the sticky variety of Ji is Shu [broomcorn millet], the sticky variety of Su [foxtail millet] is Shu [glutinous millet], and the sticky variety of Jing [non-glutinous rice] is Nuo [glutinous rice]. The original text of *Mingyi Bielu* clearly describes the nature, flavor, and functions of Shu [broomcorn millet], Shu [glutinous millet], Nuo [glutinous rice], and Daoy [rice], but commentators who were unfamiliar with these often made such errors. Nowadays, common people do not distinguish between them, generally referring to both Shu [glutinous millet] and Shu [broomcorn millet] as Huangmi [yellow millet].] Long-term consumption causes excessive heat and irritability. (Luò Yuàn in *Erya Yi* said: Shu [broomcorn millet] corresponds to Shu [heat], as it symbolizes fire and is a grain of the South. It is the most sticky, shares the same nature as Nuomi [glutinous rice], and its qi is warm. Therefore, it benefits the Lung, but excessive consumption causes irritability and heat.) Relaxes the sinews and roots, treats Heart Qi pain. (Decoct in water and take warm.)

(Among various grains, Liang [large-grained foxtail millet] is most beneficial to the Spleen and Stomach, and Huangliang [yellow foxtail millet] particularly obtains the harmonious Earth Qi.) The larger grains of Su [foxtail millet] are called Liang [large-grained foxtail millet]. (For warts on hands and feet, use Bailiang [white foxtail millet] rice flour, stir-fry in an iron pot until red, grind into fine powder, mix with saliva from many people, apply thickly about one cun, and it will disappear.)
Known as Xiaomi [millet] in the North. Benefits Qi and nourishes Kidney Qi.
Salty, bland, and slightly cold. Tonifies deficiency and damage. Benefits the Dantian. Opens the Spleen and Stomach. Promotes urination. (For chronic diarrhea with weak Stomach, stir-fry Huangmi [yellow millet/glutinous foxtail millet] into powder, use several spoons each time, mix with brown sugar and eat, which is effective.)
