Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex)
The thermal nature is warm and the substance is dense. The flavor is sweet and pungent. It benefits the Kidney and nourishes the Liver; it is used to treat deficiency-pain in the lower back and knees. It dispels Cold and overcomes Dampness; its tendinous skin, which remains connected when broken, corresponds to the human sinews (seeking treatment by similarity).
(Eucommia ulmoides is also known as "Mu Mian"; Du Zhong refers to its bark. When broken, silk-like fibers remain unbroken. Its color is purplish, and it enters exclusively the Liver Meridian. With a sweet, pungent, and warm flavor, it is good at expelling Cold-Dampness from the Lower Jiao. Once the pathogenic factors are removed, the Liver receives warmth and nourishment, thereby following its nature of growth and development. Since Yi (Wood/Liver) and Gui (Water/Kidney) share the same source, when the child [Liver] is solid, the mother [Kidney] will not be deficient. Thus, it can also tonify the Kidney. It must be noted that Du Zhong has sufficient power to expel pathogens but insufficient efficacy in nourishing.)
Wu Ti (Chaulmoogra Seed)
It treats pinworm accumulation and malnutrition consumption affecting the Lung Meridian. It is pungent, neutral, and non-toxic. It removes Wind-pathogen filth and grease from the uterus; both internal use and external washing are beneficial. (The tree producing Wu Ti resembles the Elm. Its fruit resembles elm pods. Also known as "Sha Shu," Wu Ti refers to its seeds. It is pungent, neutral, with a mousy odor. It enters the Lung and Large Intestine meridians. It specializes in killing various parasites and clearing all stagnant heat and filth, thereby cutting off the source of parasite generation.)
Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma - *Note: Text says Nong Po, likely Magnolia Bark based on description*)
The pungent flavor can reach the exterior, resolving external Wind-Cold pathogens. The bitter flavor can circulate the Middle Jiao, breaking stagnation retained in the epigastrium and abdomen. Yin coagulation and Dampness gathering can be eliminated by drying properties. It harmonizes the Stomach and broadens the chest; the warm nature can promote free flow. (Nong Po originates from Sichuan. It is the bark of the Pu tree, named so because the bark is very thick. Pungent, bitter, and warm, its nature is drying and dispersing. It enters the Qi level of the Spleen and Stomach, driving out Dampness and circulating the Middle Jiao, dissipating all Yin-coagulated stagnant Qi in the chest and abdomen, and dispersing all Wind-Cold-Dampness pathogens on the muscle surface. It is a warming, drying, and Qi-breaking agent; contraindicated for persons with deficiency.)
Hai Tong Pi (Pavloviae Cortex)
The flavor is bitter, and the nature is neutral. It treats Bi syndrome caused by various pathogens lingering in the lower part of the body. It follows the meridians and reaches the collaterals, entering the Blood level of the Kidney and Liver, promoting the circulation of deep-seated stagnation. (Hai Tong Pi grows in the valleys of the South Sea region. The tree resembles Paulownia. Its bark is yellowish-white and thorny, hence also known as Ci Tong. Bitter, neutral, and non-toxic, it sinks and descends. It can enter the Blood level of the Kidney and Liver, follow the meridians and reach the collaterals, eliminate Wind-Cold-Dampness Bi in the Lower Jiao, and acts as a dispersing agent.)
