[Sesame] Sweet and neutral. It tonifies the Liver and Kidney, fills essence and marrow, moistens the five zang organs, cools blood, benefits blood, treats wind, detoxifies, and lubricates the intestines. Note: There are differences in sesame having four, six, or seven-eight ridges, which occur due to the fertility or barrenness of the local soil. The eight-ridged variety is called Jushengzi. Old theories state that Huma (Sesame) is Zhima (Sesame), vulgarly written as Zhi. However, recent famous medical formulas often use Huma and Black Sesame together, indicating they are clearly two different substances. Zhima has similar functions; its peel and flesh are both black, and those produced in Huizhou are superior. Sesame oil cools blood, generates flesh, facilitates childbirth, and treats sores.
